The Phlebotomist obtains blood specimens through venipuncture, capillary puncture, or heel stick. Also collects nasal washings, nasopharyngeal specimens, throat cultures and performs iontophoresis in order to collect sweat. Performs patient registrations in Epic and orders lab tests in the LIS as requested by the physician. Communicates well with the patient and family. Also communicates with other laboratory staff regarding specimen requirements, ordering, and miscellaneous requests. Performs a limited number of basic tests/procedures. Follows hospital policies and procedures. Assists with phones and other miscellaneous office type duties as requested.
Responsibilities:
Identifies patient. Collects, labels, and delivers blood specimens via venipuncture, finger stick and heel stick using appropriate age-specific
Receives and processes laboratory specimens. Maintains specimen integrity for transport of specimens to lab.
Performs patient registrations in Epic and enters tests listed on physician's script into the LIS.
Collects non-blood laboratory specimens following proper procedure, to include NP and throat specimens.
Performs iontophoresis procedure for collection of sweat.
Performs limited number of basic testing procedures with accuracy and precision to include monitoring of QC. Administers Glucola in the proper dose for Glucose Tolerance testing.
Maintains work area in a neat and clean manner. Maintains supplies at adequate level.
Collects blood cultures using proper technique to avoid contamination.
Participates in the education efforts of the department to include completing continuing education and the training of new employees to perform phlebotomy procedures.
Communicates well with the patient and family to perform the procedure as well as with lab staff regarding specimen requirements, ordering, and miscellaneous requests

Technical Expertise
Experience in phlebotomy is preferred.
Excellent interpersonal skills to communicate effectively via telephone or face-to-face with patients, patient families, physicians and other staff members within the facility. Excellent organizational skills with the ability to effectively prioritize multiple tasks and coordinate their completion in a timely and accurate manner
Experience in healthcare is preferred.
Proficiency in MS Office [Outlook, Excel, Word] or similar software is required.
Education and Experience
Education: High School Diploma or equivalent is required. Graduate of Medical Assistant program or Phlebotomy Program is preferred.
Certification: Phlebotomy certification is preferred.
Years of relevant experience: 1-year phlebotomy experience is preferred and is required if the applicant is not a graduate of a Medical Assistant program or Phlebotomy Program. Pediatric phlebotomy experience is preferred.
