The Medical Laboratory Department at the University of West Florida in Pensacola, FL is seeking a chairperson with expertise in Clinical Laboratory Sciences for a Chair/Instructor appointment starting July 1, 2025. This program has been in effect in Pensacola for over 40 years and has been NAACLS accredited since 1985. The successful candidate will be expected to provide exceptional administration, leadership, and instruction at the undergraduate level. The chairperson will also serve as the program director for the NAACLS accredited MLS program. Teaching assignments will be in areas of Medical Laboratory Sciences including Chemistry, Hematology, and Immunohematology and other related fields. The successful candidate will also engage in department, college, university, community, and professional service. The successful candidate will have demonstrated a record of achievement in administration, teaching, and service.
Responsibilities:
Supervise MLS program faculty and staff, recruit and develop faculty, monitor workloads and performance.
Perform all duties necessary as a NAACLS appointed program director including accreditation procedures, NAACLS standards compliance, annual surveys, ASCP program director requirements, and continuing education.
Work with faculty and staff with student recruitment, retention, state licensure, and ASCP certification.
Oversee budget and manage program resources ethically and responsibly in accordance with University policy.
Collaborate with faculty to plan, develop, and evaluate courses and overall curriculum.
Maintain communication and coordination of the program with the faculty, clinical education coordinators (liaisons), and all individuals or disciplines involved with the program.
Develop and implement policies and procedures for effectively managing all components of the program in accordance with the University’s policies and procedures
Teach required courses in the curriculum in areas of expertise, using innovative instruction and technology in the development and delivery of the curriculum.
Engage across professional and disciplinary programs in interprofessional education to develop and grow the curriculum to ensure meaningful and collaborative opportunities in all aspects of the program.
Maintain professional competence through practice, continuing education, scholarship, and community service.
Represent the program to the community and healthcare organizations.
Ensure adequate resources for systematically designing, supervising, coordinating, and
evaluating field education.
Work with the college dean’s office and other chairs to implement college goals
Complete other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Master’s degree in CLS or other scientific discipline such as biology or chemistry.
The candidate must have current ASCP certification in all areas as a Medical Laboratory Scientist or Medical Technologist and have graduated or completed a NAACLS accredited program.
The candidate must have a current Florida state license as a Medical Technologist or be willing and able to get one.
The candidate must have classroom teaching experience in a NAACLS accredited program.
The candidate must have administration and accreditation experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
A PhD or Doctorate in Medical Laboratory Sciences or closely related scientific discipline and have a demonstrated record of achievement in teaching and service.
Experience with online teaching and learning platforms such as Canvas.
Experience with developing and teaching labs both face to face and online.
Experience with NAACLS accreditation processes
Administration experience at the college or university level
