The Laboratory Director is a Physician-Pathologist responsible for oversight of the full scope of Pathology and Laboratory services within the Western Colorado Health Care System (WCHCS) to include inpatient (acute care and critical care), outpatient services and procedural services. The Laboratory Director is responsible for all pathology and laboratory services. To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Preferred Experience: Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office. Physical Requirements: ["This is an open continuous announcement until 12/29/2023 or the vacancy is filled. Applications will be accepted and considered as they are received. The Laboratory Director is responsible to the Chief of Ancillary Services for all aspects of health care diagnosis and treatment provided by the Laboratory Service. These responsibilities include the following: Clinical (90%): Supervision of the care surrounding diagnostic testing and treatment provided by the Laboratory Technologists/Technicians organizationally responsible to the Laboratory Director. Provision of laboratory and pathology services to the veteran population in accordance with clinical privileges, medical staff bylaws, and accepted medical standards of practice. Collaboration with physicians, nurses, pharmacists. and other health care personnel providing supportive or clinical services in the various patient care areas where laboratory services are requisitioned. Administrative (10%): In coordination with the Laboratory Manager; plans, organizes, directs and controls health care programs related to laboratory services to provide ongoing, quality oriented, and fiscally sound patient care. In coordination with the Laboratory Manager; facilitates the delivery of patient care and continuity of care in collaboration with physicians, managers, and other health care personnel.. In coordination with the Laboratory Manager; provides administrative support for clinical and clerical personnel. Supporting the mission, vision, and organizational design as developed by the Executive Leadership Team. Serving as a liaison between the governing board and the laboratory stall. Providing leadership in ensuring that standards and concepts identified as goals are embraced and met by the staff. STANDARDS OF PERFORMANCE: Establishes and maintains effective relationships and patterns of communication within the Laboratory Service, among medical colleagues with administrative personnel, and with other disciplines. Accepts responsibility and accountability for planning, organizing, directing. and controlling health care programs within the Laboratory Service. Addresses actions and follow-up required by internal and external review organizations and/or accrediting bodies. Encourages staff development through participation in continuing medical education offerings, workshops, formal and informal in-service, as well as intra- and extra-mural committee involvement as indicated. Maintains quality of patient care. In coordination with the Laboratory Manager; forecasts requirements (based on objective data) necessary for long range planning and care delivery model development to enhance care delivery services and outcomes. Assures implementation and maintenance of standards of professional practice within the Laboratory Service. Participates as a health care leader in executive level decision making.
