The Co-Operative Center of Excellence in Hematology Program (CCEH) at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center is seeking to hire a Staff Scientist to lead the CCEH's Hematopoietic Cell Procurement and Processing (HCPP) Core. With over 30 years of continuous NIH funding and operational activity, the Fred Hutch's HCPP Core is internationally recognized as a leader in the procurement and distribution of hematopoietic progenitor cells throughout the US and abroad. As Manager of the HCPP, you will lead and be responsible for the development, implementation, and maintenance of quality systems and procedures in compliance with current and future guidelines. Additionally, the Laboratory Director will oversee the laboratory budget, scheduling, staffing of the laboratory, and communications with outside users. The ideal candidate will have a strong commitment to the advancement of scientific research, outstanding communication skills, and >3 years of experience in a laboratory leadership role as exemplified by overseeing a team of technicians. In addition, candidates with significant expertise in antibody-medicated cell enrichment procedures, flow cytometry, and cell cryopreservation will be viewed as highly favorable candidates. Responsibilities

  • Direct all aspects of the laboratory, including personnel, operations, and compliance with regulatory agencies.
  • Oversee existing and future quality control and assessment measures in the laboratory.
  • Supervise staff by providing direct oversight, guidance, and mentorship as needed.
  • Plan and coordinate the work of the laboratory team to meet deadlines and objectives.
  • Interpret and oversee correlative data characterizing cellular products through acquisition, enrichment, cryopreservation, and distribution.
  • Supervise the input of user information, results, and correlative data into data management system.
  • Assist core users with orders, special requests, unforeseen product issues, and troubleshooting of problems potentially related to provided resources.
  • Work with internal and external partners to define project goals, resources, priorities; allocate and monitor effort and progress, redistribute or negotiate addition of resources as required; and ensure deliverables are completed within projected timelines.
  • Assist PI with extraction, interpretation, summarization, and presentation of data for annual progress reports, biannual productivity report, and grant renewals.
  • Train new staff members on laboratory procedures and protocols.
  • Oversee the equipment verification and calibration through current standard operating procedures and outside maintenance programs, when appropriate.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • PhD in related science field with 3 years of experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3-5 years of experience in a leadership role in a research laboratory
  • Proven track record of successful management of people and projects.
  • Proficiency and experience in cell cryopreservation, tissue culture, flow cytometry, fluorescence-activated cell sorting, and cell purification techniques using autoMACS(r), CliniMACS(r), or comparable instruments
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to think outside the box.
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills. Ability to identify problems and troubleshoot solutions with limited direction.

The annual base salary range for this position is from $65,484.00 to $165,440.00 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications. This position may be eligible for relocation assistance.Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center offers employees a comprehensive benefits package designed to enhance health, well-being, and financial security. Benefits include medical/vision, dental, flexible spending accounts, life, disability, retirement, family life support, employee assistance program, onsite health clinic, tuition reimbursement, paid vacation (22 days per year), paid sick leave (up to 30 calendar days per occurrence of a qualifying reason), paid holidays (up to 13 days per year), paid parental leave (up to 4 weeks), and partially paid sabbatical leave (up to 12 months for professor track faculty, up to 6 months for other scientific staff).
