A Research Technician I position is available in the Adeyemi Lab in the Basic Sciences Division at Fred Hutch. Anticipated start date is Fall 2023.

Maintaining genomic integrity is critical for survival. Our lab is interested in understanding the molecular mechanisms of genome maintenance - how DNA repair is orchestrated in response to different types of cellular insults, how these processes are dysregulated during genetic diseases, infections, aging and cancer, and how such knowledge can potentially be exploited towards novel therapies.

The successful candidate will work with the principal investigator and other lab members to carry out a variety of cutting-edge genetic, cellular and molecular techniques in cellular/molecular biology, genetics and virology. The work will lead to the discovery and characterization of novel genome maintenance mechanisms following replication stress and will help to identify novel targets for the treatment of tumors with defects in specific DNA repair genes. In addition to performing experiments, the candidate will play an important role in the daily operation of the laboratory. The Research Technician will directly support the science, contribute to papers, and thrive in a diverse, inclusive, supportive, creative, fast-paced and learning-focused environment.

Responsibilities

• This position works independently under the guidance of, and in conjunction with the P.I. and other lab members in accomplishing the lab's goals.
• Experiments and projects involve:
  • Performing standard molecular biology techniques (cloning, site-directed mutagenesis, plasmid prep, etc)
  • Performing tissue culture work involving transfections, viral vector infections, CRISPR knockout cell line generation and so on.
  • Assisting in CRISPR functional genomic screens to identify genes required for the selective survival under stress conditions.
  • Validating and characterizing novel screen hits using western blotting, immunofluorescence microscopy and other techniques.
  • Establishing new and modifying existing research techniques.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in biology, biochemistry, microbiology, biotechnology or related science field is required.
• 1-3 years' experience with standard molecular and cell biology techniques (nucleic acid isolation/ manipulation/ PCR/ cloning/ transformation) is required. Experience with mammalian cell culture would be helpful.
• Careful, independent thinker with attention to detail.
• Ability to work independently and/or with others as a team member on multiple projects.
• The ideal candidate would be self-motived, scientifically curious, excited by discoveries and committed to high quality science.
• While this position is focused on discovery and supporting research projects, it may involve administrative responsibilities related to lab safety, ordering, and databases. Therefore, having excellent organizational and analytical skills is a desirable asset.

The hourly pay range for this position is from $21.56 to $30.69 and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.
