JOB SUMMARY: 

The Medical Lab Scientist is responsible for performing complex laboratory tests on blood, body fluids, cells, and tissues. Scientists will identify bacteria, parasites, and other microorganisms, analyze the chemical content of fluids, and cross-match blood for transfusion and organ transplantation, as well as aseptically prepare cells for use in cellular therapies. The results of these tests are used in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. 

The Automated Testing Laboratory is a high-volume, fully automated lab that uses the Cobas 8000 modular analyzer series and automated track. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION(S):

Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology or Clinical Laboratory Science from a NAACLS accredited program or Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical or biological sciences program that includes: 16 semester hours of Biology (including one semester of microbiology) and 16 semester hours of Chemistry (including one semester of organic or biochemistry) and proof of eligibility to sit for an applicable certification exam (ASCP, AMT, ACHI or equivalent).

Medical Lab Scientist or department-specific Technologist Certification through ASCP, AMT, ACHI or an equivalent certification agency must be obtained within 18 months of employment for all Medical Lab Scientists at the Penn State Health, Milton S. Hershey Department of Pathology.

Applicants trained outside of the United States must provide documentation of equivalency evaluation of their education and training to ensure it is equivalent to CLIA requirements. The equivalency evaluations must be performed by a nationally recognized organization. Ex. National Association Credential Evaluation Services, Inc. (NACES), the Association of International Credential Evaluators, Inc. (AICE). The applicant is responsible for paying the cost of the equivalency evaluation.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

Laboratory experience in a hospital setting preferred 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*: 

Able to stand frequently, walk frequently, sit constantly. 

Able to lift/carry 0-20 lbs frequently; 21-50 lbs occasionally. 

Able to push 0-50 lbs occasionally. 

Able to pull 0-20 lbs frequently; 21-50 lbs occasionally. 

Able to climb occasionally, reach constantly. 

Able to use hands for simple/firm grasping.
