Physician Scientist serving as the Deputy Associate Chief of Staff (DACOS) for the Research and Development (R&D) service line of VA Puget Sound Healthcare System. The DACOS for R&D fully shares with the ACOS the direction of all phases of the R&D program and work. As part of the R&D management team under the supervision of the ACOS, the DACOS formulates the goals and objectives of the research program for the facility. To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Preferred Experience: SPECIALTIES: Medicine, Psychiatry, Neurology, Rehabilitation Medicine, Anesthesiology & Pain Medicine, Laboratory Medicine & Pathology, Obstetrics & Gynecology, Ophthalmology; Surgery Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. Physical Requirements: Light Lifting, Light Carrying, Reaching above the shoulder, Use of fingers, Both hands required, Walking (.5), Standing (.5), Near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4, Far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other. Responsibilities and duties include but are not limited to the following: Initiates policies, procedures and organizational structures necessary to achieve the stipulated goals. Plans, develops and directs the complex scientific and administrative activities necessary to advance the program. Co-leadership responsibility for all administrative and budgetary operations of the Research service and for the supervision and evaluation of service personnel through subordinate supervisors. Compliance with both VISN- and VACO-mandated research policies including those issued by the Office of Research and Development (ORD) and the Office of Research Oversight (ORO). R&D service line assists numerous principal investigators with research projects funded by VA, National Institutes of Health (NIH), Department of Defense (DOD) and other federal agencies, non-profit foundations, various corporations, private companies, academic institutions and other organizations. Works closely with research investigators by mentoring and assisting them with proposal development and budget preparation to meet the Research & Development (R&D) Committee and sub-committee requirements and, as such, will serve as the primary point of contact for the local Research community. Ongoing clinical care and management of patients in one-half day per week clinic or its equivalent which may include the clinical supervision and teaching to fellows, residents, and University of Washington (UW) medical students. Or the incumbent will be responsible for clinical care of patients while serving as an attending physician on a teaching service for a total of one month each academic year. Expected to have an independent, funded, collaborative program of research that is consistent with the mission of VA.
