Position Summary 

Supervises technical and/or non-technical laboratory personnel and daily operations in assigned areas/shifts to achieve  organization and regulatory requirements. 

Supervises personnel, processes, service levels, regulatory compliance, and service levels in assigned areas. Functional  areas of responsibility may include, but are not limited to technical discipline areas in which department is licenses, specimen  collection, specimen processing and specimen referral testing. Performs technical and non-technical duties in assigned areas  of responsibility as required. 

Responsible for achieving department goals for service, quality, regulatory compliance, financial performance, personnel  management, patient satisfaction, healthy work environment, and integration of intra and inter-departmental activities in areas  of responsibility.

Position Responsibilities & Key Performance Indicators 

I Quality of Work: All IRL employees are responsible for competence when performing duties. Quality is measured by  adherence to policies and procedures, accuracy and consistent application of performance  improvement standards. Employees are also expected to display good judgment and commitment to  excellence and development. 

II Compliance All IRL employees must be committed to adherence to company Code of Conduct standards.  Employees are responsible for understanding and conforming to regulatory standards, accepted work  principles for healthcare service delivery and promotion of security, privacy, ethics and integrity. 

III Safety All IRL employees are accountable for maintaining a safe work environment. Employees are  expected to apply the highest standard of patient safety, infection control and general work place  practices. 

IV Customer Service All IRL employees are expected to focus on satisfying customer needs, maintain successful customer  interactions and to support IRL’s mission and goals. Employees must also demonstrate effective  communication skills. 

V Productivity All IRL employees are required to meet position responsibilities within the appropriate timeframe.  Employees must have the ability to prioritize and manage time. Good work practices that support  efficiency and appropriate attendance are essential for meeting this standard. 

VI Teamwork All IRL employees must work together in a spirit of cooperation. Employees must be flexible and  committed to performing duties during natural disasters and other emergencies. Employees are  

obligated to demonstrate support of company values, display respect, dignity, appreciation for diversity and professional interaction.

 

Position Responsibilities:
1. Is proficient with personal computers and information systems relative to job duties

4. Ability to plan, organize and effectively present ideas and concepts to groups
5. Ability to assimilate information from a variety of sources, analyze and recommend action to be taken

7. Demonstrates skill required to supervise, teach and motivate staff
8. Demonstrates excellent problem solving and sound decision making skills
9. Development and monitoring of statistical analysis of quality measurements and standards
10. Continually monitors and stays abreast of legislative and regulatory changes affecting the laboratory industry, and
ensures changes are accurately communicated to affected departments and implemented on a timely basis
11. Follows safety policies and procedures
12. Protects sensitive and confidential information by actively participating in the Privacy & Security Awareness program
13. Adheres to company policies and standards regarding security
14. Completes assigned courses and training on an annual basis
15. Available to work during disasters
Management Functions:
1. Concurrently monitors employee and departmental performance to ensure adherence to policies and procedures,
timelines and regulatory requirements
2. Reviews all departmental policies and procedures at least annually and revises, as needed. Develops, implements and
monitors new policies and procedures as needed
3. Ensures that department employees attend all mandatory IRL/departmental in-services and staff meetings
Quality Improvement Functions:
1. Develops monitoring systems for the collection, documentation and reporting of quality assessment and improvement
data; extracts pertinent information from quality assessment and improvement studies, initiates corrective action plans,
and re-monitors results
2. Evaluates existing systems and processes and develops corrective action plans for service/quality trends identified
Initiates changes and monitors for improvement
3. Ensures that departments proactively respond to feedback from customers (internal and external) and implements
improvement mechanisms to enhance the overall ability of the department to meet the customer’s needs for laboratory
services
Fiscal Functions:
1. Concurrently monitors resource utilization, including payroll, supplies and expenses, client volume and revenue variation
reports, outpatient volume reports, mileage and expense logs; participates in MOR. Takes action immediately, as needed,
to rectify problems
2. Responsible to ensure the weekly and monthly corporate key indicators are an accurate measurement of past and current
performance for a basis for proactive response to a changing environment
3. Ensures legal and ethical practices are always maintained
4. Prepares and submits capital expenditure requests, department projections and annual budget.
Human Resource Functions:
1. Monitors and evaluates the activities of the staff and provides management, coaching, guidance, delegation opportunities,
and on-the-job training and re-training as necessary to ensure operational efficiency and adherence to policies and
procedures; fosters open communication by offering, encouraging, and accepting suggestions from staff regarding
department operations
2. Screens, interviews and selects qualified individuals for open positions within the department
3. Reviews all department employee job descriptions at least annually and revises, as needed. Provides employees with a
new job description if substantive changes are made
4. Completes and conducts performance evaluations for all staff under direct supervision after three months of employment
and annually, in a timely manner
5. Maintains department education files, including new employee orientation checklist, equipment training checklist,
mandatory in-service attendance confirmation and continuing education
6. Develops and monitors improvement action plans, as needed, to correct poor job performance
7. Initiates counseling and discipline according to policies and procedures
8. Terminations, status changes, and other personnel actions are completed in a timely fashion
9. Reviews and approves payroll time sheets, purchasing requisitions, check requests, and scheduling requests
10. Employee injuries are reported within specified time frames and IRL policy/procedure for work related injuries is followed
and supported

  • 2-Year/Associate Degree in Science or Medical Technology is required
  • 4-Year/Bachelor Degree in Medical Technology is helpful
  • A State of Florida Supervisor’s License is required OR the ability to obtain a license during the interview process
  • 5 years’ experience as a Medical Technologist; required.
  • Prior supervisory experience is beneficial
  • Licensure is 3 technical specialties preferred
