Job Summary:

Performs venipunctures and capillary collection competently and expediently with as little discomfort to patient as possible. This service will encompass all duty locations according to the laboratory's needs, or any site indicated by the Laboratory Manager. Has thorough knowledge of test requirements, specimen processing, archival, and limited waived point of care testing. Can also service customers as a receptionist for the Laboratory, greeting, assisting and providing patient/family education. Maintains knowledge of Laboratory computer system in the registration process, ordering, collection, receipt, and cancellation of specimens. Must be able to handle all incoming phone calls with the expectation to address as many of the inquires as possible, including faxing of results, follow through of all add-ons, specimen requirement questions, etc. Has agility with use of Lab Information system to efficiently process all specimen add-on and know how to merge orders with proper cancelation with documentation. Knows how to manage Labels and order appropriate test codes for all extra samples. Promotes positive public and departmental relations. When assigned, can work in the sendout area, aliquoting and shipping specimens with understanding of wide spectrum of send out tests, their requirements and processes of sending the specimens. With proper orientation and supervision, can assist in the Technical areas, as defined by Department Supervisors and/ or Laboratory Manager - assisting may include Microbiology culture plating and specimen handling, Hematology loading of CBC specimens on analyzers, Urinalysis loading of specimens on analyzer, and Chemistry assisting as directed. Further technical duties would require working and managing the Lab Automation System Input/Output Module and Auto-Archive Storage Module. Loading all specimens into the system and addressing and resolving all system errors and exceptions related to the specimens being loaded.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Consistently draws blood successfully from all age groups that promote accuracy and precision in patient testing.

Can speak to and understand the specimen requirements for Laboratory tests. Knowledgeable of which color top tube and volume of blood needed and special time and temperature dependent requirements.

Demonstrate proficiency for collecting throat cultures for rapid strep testing.

Can properly demonstrate acceptable contamination rate for drawing blood cultures, based on following proper collection procedure.

Adheres to the strict criteria when performing Patient Identification - comparing, at the chair or bedside, patient information on the requisition to the in-patient's identification band, using 2 identifiers and verbal confirmation, before venipuncture is performed. For outpatients, two identifiers are maintained by asking patient to verbalize these items and comparing to the printed requisition.

Has technical abilities to manage all aspects of the Laboratory Automation Input/Output Module knowing its computer system and requirements for loading all specimens and resolution of all errors and exceptions.

Is able to handle phone inquiries coming into lab resolving most requests first hand.

As assigned can process Microbiology specimens including culture plating, and load specimens on various laboratory analyzers.

Displays courteous, professional manner towards patients, co-workers, nursing and medical staff at all times.

Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors. Maintains patient confidentiality at all times.

Labels and records all collection tubes with correct requisition label, along with date, time and initials.

Follows proper hand hygiene, in addition to standard universal and isolation precautions.

Knowledge of computer tasks such as collection batches, un-received specimen lists, add-ons, cancellations

Regularly prints, reviews, and take action on outstanding specimen reports.

Participates in Quality Improvement as it applies to Specimen Collections.

Disposes all sharps in a rigid biohazard container. Cleans and supplies phlebotomy trays. Maintains clean and organized work areas. Orders supplies when needed. Assists with stocking all laboratory supplies.

Requires minimal supervision in performance of job duties, handles direct inquiries to the appropriate Lab departments.

Completes duties in a time efficient manner, knows how to prioritize STAT orders, ASAP orders, timed draws and trauma protocol. Knowledge of communication avenues, such as trauma pagers, and use of Vocera paging system.

Seeks guidance and direction from Technologists, Supervisors and Lab Manager as necessary.

Is responsible for and involved in the training and mentorship of new employees and students.

Demonstrates the value of team concept on a consistent basis.

Assists Clinical Laboratory Scientists, receiving and triaging specimens to the proper work areas.

When assigned, can assist in the sendout area, aliquoting and shipping specimens.

Follows policies and procedures for the Clinical Laboratory and the hospital.

Professional Requirements:

Adheres to dress code.

Completes annual educational requirements.

Maintains regulatory requirements.

Wears identification while on duty.

Maintains confidentiality at all times.

Attends department staff meetings as required within the department.

Reports to work on time and as scheduled; completes work in designated time.

Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner.

Actively participates in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement (CQI) activities.

Coordinates efforts in meeting regulatory compliance, federal, state and local regulations and standards

Communicates and complies with the Benefis Health System Mission, Vision and Values as well as the focus statement of the department.

Complies with Benefis Health System Organization Policies and Procedures.

Complies with Health and Safety Standards and Guidelines.

Education/Experience Requirements:

High school graduate or equivalent.

Phlebotomy experience required.

Technical Laboratory Assisting Skills preferred.

Phlebotomy certification or Medical Secretary Certification preferred.
