Primary Function:

The Coding Associate (Training Program) will be responsible for the completion of coder training program including online training modules, tests and assessments, classroom and independent coding education work assignments, and participation requirements. Demonstrate readiness to assume responsibility for accurate and timely assignment of ICD and CPT codes, payment classification assignment, and abstracting for reimbursement purposes and collection of statistical information on Inpatient or Outpatient patient records.

IMPORTANT: Attending one of the virtual Coding Associate Training Program Information Sessions will be required for all interested applicants. We will be holding two Information Sessions- February 7th at 8:00am-9:00am & February 9th- 6:00pm-7:00pm. Please register through the links below to one of the Information Session that works for you. Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Complete classroom and independent coding and coding related course assignments.
  • Demonstrate sufficient understanding of complex subject matter included in the study of anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, pathophysiology.
  • Demonstrate understanding and recall of coding rules and guidelines as developed by CMS, AHIMA and the AMA.
  • Accurately applies diagnosis and procedure codes utilizing ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT and HCPCS codes in all test and practice coding scenarios on both inpatient and outpatient records.
  • Demonstrate understanding and incremental skill development in the interpretation and application of coding guidelines for accurate code assignment on practice and real-time patient medical records.
  • Identify the importance of medical record documentation on code assignment through the interpretation of information contained in reports or notes maintained in patient record applications.
  • Demonstrate understanding of impact of medical record documentation on reimbursement through utilization of prospective payment systems.
  • Review and interpret Inpatient and Outpatient records assigning appropriate ICD diagnosis, ICD procedure, CPT procedure codes and inpatient or outpatient payment classification in accordance with CMS regulations, official and internal outpatient coding guidelines.
  • Abstract pertinent data to determine and sequence codes for diagnoses and procedures.
  • Enter all coding information into the computerized abstracting system.
  • Demonstrate ability to locate, retrieve and interpret information on diagnostic reports (i.e., radiology, pathology, EKG reports, laboratory values, doctors' orders, and administrative medication forms) to accurately code patient charts and communicate missing or needed documentation requirements as applicable.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • Successful completion of a biology or chemistry class preferred.
