Job Functions, Duties, Responsibilities and Position Qualifications:

Job Summary:

Under the general supervision of the Pathologists, the PA Supervisor independently performs or assists in dissection, description and histologic sampling of a full range of surgical specimens while monitoring and directing others on the team.

Essential Key Responsibilities:

  • Assists quality by assuring appropriate specimen accession.
  • Enhances data picture by obtaining clinical history as indicated.
  • Prepares tissues for histologic processing by describing anatomic features, dissecting specimens.
  • Obtains biological specimens for analysis (viral and blood cultures, toxilogical material, etc.) and perform special procedures (tumor triage, coronary artery perfusion, faxitron, etc.)
  • Photographs pertinent gross specimens and microscopic slides.
  • Performs duties relating to the administrative maintenance of surgical pathology protocols and reports on data: File reports, protocols, photographic and microscopic slides; Assure completion of coding.
  • Enhances understanding and diagnosis accuracy by assisting in the preparation, performance and documentation of human postmortem examinations.
  • Participates in corporate Quality Management Committee to ensure a consistent and constant focus on improvement in quality.
  • Performs troubleshooting of problem cases as required to correct any errors and assist the Pathologists with producing accurate diagnoses.
  • Maintains department staffing schedule to ensure no gaps in function.
  • Develops, conducts and maintains relevant training programs to increase the staff's qualifications and ability to consistently produce high quality work in a timely manner.
  • Conducts performance evaluations and makes recommendations for necessary disciplinary actions.
  • Serves as a role model to department employees ensuring a sense of urgency and pride.
  • Conducts/attends meetings as needed to disseminate information, maintain relationships and communication throughout all levels of GPA generating reports as appropriate.
  • Promotes safety and accuracy with the proper maintenance of equipment, provision of supplies and the cleanliness of the surgical pathology suite.
  • Promotes sales, marketing, Company visibility and state of the art by assisting in the organization and coordination of anatomic pathology conferences.
  • Keeps company integrity by maintaining security and confidentiality of all data, procedures and data system components.

Education/Licensure/Certification:

  • Bachelor in Laboratory Science.
  • Completion of a Pathologists Assistant program accredited by the American Society for Clinical Pathology.

Experience:

  • 5 years experience as a pathologist assistant.

  • Successful completion of a visual color discrimination test.
  • Successful completion of annual continuing education units per state licensure and/or ASCP guidelines.

Equipment:

  • Computers, computer programs, information system(s), scanners, dictation machine, forceps, rulers, band saw, issue dyes, scalpel or razor blades, microtomes, cryostats, water baths, slide rack, tissue processors, drying ovens, automatic stainers, cover slippers, and personal protective equipment.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Certification by ASCP as Pathologists' Assistant.
  • Knowledge of accession, dissection, anatomical description and histological sampling methods and techniques.
  • Knowledge of gross room pathology procedures, protocols and techniques.
  • Knowledge of procedures, regulations and standards for the acquisition of human tissue specimens for research.
  • Ability to perform frozen sections and other intra-operative consultations.
  • Knowledge of quality standards and requirements for pathology specimen photographs.
  • Record maintenance skills.
  • Ability to pass color deficiency testing.
  • Knowledge of chemical reagents and equipment used in pathology research.
  • Knowledge of biological specimen disposal, maintenance and storage procedures and techniques.
  • Ability to maintain quality, safety and infection control standards.
  • Knowledge of accreditation and certification requirements and standards.
  • Must participate in the following UNM required training: Respiratory Protection Training; Basic Annual Safety Training; Bloodborne Pathogen Annual Training; Formaldehyde Safety Annual Training; Hazard Communication (area specific); Infectious Waste Training.
  • Tuberculosis Training: Ability to supervise, advise and train clinical professionals and / or students in a specific area of expertise.
  • Fellow membership in American Association of Pathologists' Assistants required.

Environmental Working Conditions:

  • Laboratory work environment with exposure to various chemicals and equipment. Prolonged sitting, frequent walking, standing, bending, stooping and lifting up to fifty (50) pounds. Safety equipment and personal protective equipment provided and required. Requires normal range of hearing and manual dexterity sufficient to operate office and laboratory equipment. On-call status after normal hours of operations.

Physical Requirements:

  • Physical demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger; handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear; taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to focus. Requires visual acuity and normal color perception.
