Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. 

 

Assist the Point of Care Testing (POCT) Supervisor in the implementation and maintenance of Point of Care Testing instruments and kits involved in the Duke University Hospital Point of Care Testing Program to ensure quality patient care.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Administrative duties to include: filing, scanning of documents, and data entry.  Receiving and returning of instruments.  Receive and properly store reagents.
  • Delivery of needed reagents to clinics/units as needed.
  • Survey and identify POCT equipment and test kits within the locations under the Duke Point of Care Testing Program.
  • Set up, operate, and maintain laboratory equipment and test systems according to established procedures/policies.
  • Perform Quality Control, linearities, and maintenance protocols on instruments and test systems used in POCT following established procedures.
  • Monitor and perform troubleshooting/problem solving of instruments, test systems, and general laboratory problems:  a) ensure documentation of problems, and b) recognize problems/situations that need to be brought to the attention of the POCT Supervisor and Director of Quality Improvement.
  • Assist in the implementation of External Proficiency Testing Programs for the POCT Program including distribution and pick-up.
  • Monitor the usage and purchase of supplies to maintain orderly work flow, ensuring maximum usage and minimum waste.
  • Interact in a professional manner with patients, doctors, nurses and other staff members.
  • Attend Continuing Education events in order to stay current with new developments within POCT.
  • Work at the Cardinal warehouse as needed to monitor the amount of manual product on hand, and perform all Quality Control for product distribution.
  • Monitor, investigate, and communicate to nursing staff patient data transmission problems.
  • Maintain data interface by reporting problems to Supervisor, DHTS, or interface vender.
  • Support POCT sites with troubleshooting of docking stations.
  • Perform tasks that are not specifically covered by your job description and to perform all reasonable tasks as requested by a Medical Laboratory Scientist, Advanced or the Manager.
 
Minimum Qualifications: 

Education:
High School diploma or GED.

 
Experience:
One year previous experience and/or alternatively, an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.

 
Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification:
Requires a valid NC Driver license.  
DMV driving history must meet the guidelines set by Duke Health to operate a DUMC vehicle. 

 
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of medical terms preferred.
  • Must be skilled in the use of a computer and have knowledge of hierarchal databases and spreadsheet management (Excel/Word/PowerPoint).
  • Professional communication skills to interact with the POC Testing end users.
  • Working knowledge of laboratory and hospital computer systems is helpful.
  • Thorough knowledge of laboratory safety and infection control procedures and practices including standard precautions and hazardous chemical hand ling.
  • Ability to demonstrat e required dexterity, knowledge, and ability to complete assigned laboratory tasks and skills, attention to detail, and compliance with all appropriate regulatory and safety requirements.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees.
  • Ability to perform independently in resolving lab problems.
  • Must be able to walk distances (North from South within 10 minutes)
