Principal Investigator: Yong Wan, PhD, Professor, Department of Pharmacology and Chemical Biology; Director, Glenn Family Breast Center; Winship Cancer Institute, Emory University, Atlanta, GA, Email: yong.wan@emory.edu

New NIH-funded positions are available for ambitious and outstanding postdocs to participate in studies of molecular mechanisms and therapy development for cancer. Fellows are expected to be independent, capable of leading their own research projects and be in charge of all aspects of their project from conception, data generation and analysis to grant submissions and preparation of scientific publications under the guidance of the PI.

Available projects include:

  • Targeting posttranslational modifications in breast tumor immune checkpoint function and immunotherapy (Cancer Discover 2020.10(12))
  • Targeting posttranslational modifications in genome stability and breast cancer treatment (EMBO Mol Med. 2020.12(12))
  • Targeting posttranslational modifications in oncogenic signaling and breast cancer treatment (Cancer Research 2020.80(12))

    The laboratory is located in the NCI-designated Winship Cancer Institute (https://winshipcancer.emory.edu), which provides an outstanding and stimulating scientific environment with multiple supportive core facilities and shared resources. Emory University is one of the nation's leading cancer research and treatment centers and is committed to the development and success of outstanding postdoctoral scientists. The Office of Postdoctoral Education (OPE) at Emory University provides mentoring and career guidance and postdocs benefit from a faculty mentoring committee that guides their training and progress. Postdoctoral scholars qualify for Emory sponsored benefits, including health, life, and other insurances.

    Candidates should have a Ph.D. or equivalent in the biomedical sciences (molecular biology, biochemistry, cancer biology, drug discovery and related disciplines), mastery of oral and written English. Prior experience with animal models of cancer and bioinformatics are an advantage. The initial appointment is set for 12 months, followed by annual renewal based on mutual agreement. Salary is commensurate with experience and Institutional guidelines.     The Post Doctoral Fellow's responsibility is to focus on the research projects that investigate the role of post-translational modifications (e.g., ubiquitin-proteasome, protein glycosylation, protein methylation) in tumor immunology, oncogenic signaling network and anti-breast cancer therapy and develop the next generation of impactful treatment strategies for cancer treatment. It is anticipated that the candidate will, under Dr. Wan's supervision, expand your research to develop collaboration with other Faculty in the Department, across Winship and the University with a focus on translating breast cancer research from bench to bedside and back.

    JOB DESCRIPTION:

    • Helps design and conduct research within a specified field while receiving advanced training from a designated Principal Investigator to enhance professional skills and research independence needed for pursuit of a career.
    • The specific area of research in which the trainee is mentored is determined by the department and laboratory of the Postdoc.
    • Designs and evaluates experiments.
    • Develops new ideas that promote current research.
    • Prepares and publishes scientific manuscripts under the direction of the Principal Investigator.
    • May be responsible for operation of specific equipment.
    • May teach techniques to others, train, and supervise research staff.

    ADDITIONAL JOB DETAILS:

    • This position is for the Department of Pharmacology and Chemical Biology at Emory University School of Medicine for an Instructor who has demonstrated expertise in molecular biology, cell biology, and disease related research.
    • The candidate will participate academic research activities at both Department of Pharmacology and Chemical Biology and Winship Cancer Center.
    • This candidate will participate in supervision of student, junior post-doc and medical fellow and some lab organization.
    • The new recruit will directly report to Dr. Yong Wan, Research Director of Glenn Family Breast Center and Professor of Department of Pharmacology and Chemical Biology.
    • Positions are temporary appointments as a research trainee.
    • The initial appointment is for one year, renewal expected if progress is satisfactory and funds are available.
    • Appointments cannot exceed five years.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    • A doctoral degree or equivalent (Ph.D., M.D., ScD., D.V.M., DDS etc) in an appropriate field.
    • Excellent scientific writing ability and strong oral communication skills.
    • The ability to work effectively and collegially with colleagues.
    • Additional qualifications as specified by the Principal Investigator.

    NOTE: Position tasks are generally required to be performed in-person at an Emory University location. Remote work from home day options may be granted at department discretion. Emory reserves the right to change remote work status with notice to employee.
