Discover Your Career at Emory University

Emory University is a leading research university that fosters excellence and attracts world-class talent to innovate today and prepare leaders for the future. We welcome candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of our academic community.

Description

The department of Neurology is looking for a highly-motivated and well-trained post-doctoral trainee who has recently completed a PhD in Neuroscience or Immunology. The position is funded via an NIH R01 grant which will investigate the role of signaling pathways (ERK) occurring within neurons and microglia in the context of aging, neurodegeneration and APOE genetic risk. The methods applied in this project include novel mouse models for in vivo cell type specific proteomic labeling (including proximity labeling via TurboID and bio-orthogonal chemistry approaches), mouse models of neurodegeneration and stroke, flow cytometry, a combination of transcriptomics and proteomics approaches, and high-dimensional data analytics.

Lab description:Our lab currently has 12 members (including 4 graduate students, 1 senior research scientist and 2 senior lab technicians and 5 undergraduate students). The PI is strongly committed to career development of trainees. More details can be obtained at Rangaraju Laboratory | Emory School of Medicine. In addition to basic wet lab resources, the trainee will have access to several core facilities at Emory (including proteomics, custom cloning, flow cytometry), the opportunity to collaborate with several investigative teams in cell biology, physiology, biochemistry, neuroscience, immunology, as well as inter-disciplinary collaborations with investigators at Georgia Tech.

Environment:The Rangaraju Lab is located in the Whitehead Biomedical Research Building at Emory University, within the Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (CND). The lab was established in 2015 and has been successfully funded via NIH and foundational grants. Emory and the CND has successfully trained several post-doctoral trainees who have then gone on to obtain competitive positions within academia and in industry.

Applicant requirements:There are no specific visa or citizenship requirements. The candidate must have a working knowledge of the following:1. The use of transcriptomics approaches (including bulk or single-cell RNAseq or Nanostring) to investigate cellular mechanisms in any biological context, and a practical knowledge of how to handle high-dimensional data (starting from raw data, normalization, batch correction and differential expression analysis). A conceptual understanding of bioinformatic approaches (eg. network analysis and gene set enrichment analysis) is strongly preferred.2. A strong foundation in immunology or neuro-immune interactions. Already mentioned above3. The ability to generate high quality figures and visual representations of data and the ability to adapt to various analytic platforms.4. Clear demonstration of scientific writing (via either publications, abstracts, grant applications) and effective communication skills.5. Experience with basic molecular biology techniques (e.g., Western blot, immunohistochemistry, qPCR).6. Comfortable with animal handling or at least willing to work with animal models.

Names of at least 2 referees who have directly worked with the applicant must be provided at the time of application.
