JOB SUMMARY

Under the administrative direction of the Chair of the Department of Pathology, assumes professional, scientific, consultative, administrative and educational responsibilities as needed in sections for the Division of Anatomic Pathology.

Typical Duties

The Attending Physician VIII (Pathologist) is expected to participate actively in the delivery of quality patient care and service by each section in the Division of Anatomic Pathology.

In the Section of Autopsy Pathology

* As needed, performs the postmortem examination on all assigned cares. Works alone or teaches and supervises the resident(s)/fellow(s) or other assigned health professionals including students on dissection, gross description, documentation, selection, of sections, microscopic examination and clinical pathologic correlation of the autopsy findings.

* Responsible for issuing timely provisional and final anatomic diagnosis of assigned cases.

* Performs other duties as assigned by the Section Director of Autopsy Pathology and the Chair of the Division of Anatomic Pathology.

In the Section of Surgical Pathology

* As needed, performs the gross examination, dissection, documentation and photography and sampling for microscopic examination in all assigned cases.

* Performs the microscopic examination and edits the gross and microscopic findings on all assigned cases.

* Provides intraoperative consultations with or without frozen sections on all assigned cases.

* Responsible for the timely completion and reporting of intraoperative consultations.

* Responsible for the timely completion and reporting of all assigned surgical pathology cases.

* Expected to work independently; however, completion of a case may involve and require working with, teaching, and supervising pathologist extenders, residents, fellows, other health professionals, and students

* Completes all Histology and Surgical Pathology forms that are required for the sections Quality Control/Quality Assurance activities.

* Follows the policies and procedures in the Sections of Autopsy and Surgical Pathology, Division of Anatomic Pathology and Department of Pathology.

* Participates in service coverage rotation schedule in Surgical Pathology. On assigned call days, will be responsible for the final disposition of all surgical pathology specimens that are accessioned to the attending pathologist and accessioned specimens, including the performance of intraoperative consultations (with or without frozen sections) up to 4pm. Signs out all the cases accessioned to the attending pathologist on the day on call. Covers as scheduled (one week at a time) night (4:00pm to 7:00am next day), weekend (24 hours) and holiday (24 hour) calls.

* Supervises and teaches pathologist extenders, residents and fellows in Surgical Pathology, and other health professionals and students rotating in Surgical Pathology. Covers autopsy service as needed.

* Shares responsibilities for the maintenance of all educational programs and postgraduate medical education involving Autopsy and Surgical Pathology.

* Supports and participates in scholarly activities and clinical research in the Division of Anatomic Pathology and Department of Pathology.

* Performs as assigned duties in the Division of Anatomic Pathology according to the nationally accepted standards in the field of Anatomic Pathology.

* Performs other duties as assigned by the Section Director of Surgical Pathology or the Chair of the Division of Anatomic Pathology.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy Medicine (DO) from an accredited medical college or university.
  • Valid License as a Physician in the State of Illinois
  • Completed residency training in Anatomic Pathology or Anatomic and Clinical Pathology
  • Board Certification or Board Eligibility in Anatomic Pathology, or Anatomic and Clinical Pathology with the ability to become Board Certified within one (1) year of starting employment
Preferred Qualifications
  • Surgical Pathology Fellowship with subspecialty training, expertise or interest, especially in breast pathology, dermatopathology, soft tissue and bone pathology, informatics, histology laboratory expertise
    Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics

    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills which includes meticulous and legible medical documentation necessary to communicate with all levels of staff and a patient population composed of diverse cultures and age groups.
    • Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
    • Strong diagnostic skills in the fields of Autopsy and Surgical Pathology.
    • Strong personal and communication skills, and a firm commitment to providing excellent patient care.

      Degrees awarded outside of the United States with the exception of those awarded in one of the United States' territories and Canada must be credentialed by an approved U.S. credential evaluation service belonging to the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) or the Association of International Credential Evaluators (AICE). Original credentialing documents must be presented at time of interview.

      Must successfully meet the credentialing standards established by the Cook County Health and Hospitals System to include a State of Illinois MD license and any other license, certification, or specialized training, etc. no later than two (2) weeks prior to the candidate's start date
