Term Research Position in HIV-1 Molecular Biology

DESCRIPTION: A laboratory in the Department of Pathology, Microbiology, and Immunology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center seeks a highly motivated Research Assistant to perform laboratory research to advance our understanding of the function of the viral capsid during HIV-1 infection.

Research Information:

We are seeking a highly motivated individual to work in a basic science research laboratory that studies lung development in mice. The primary role for this position will be maintenance of the laboratory mouse colony for our laboratory group (combined group of 3 PIs, ~250 average daily cages). Strong candidates will be able to accurately genotype mice using PCR with our established protocols and possess attention to detail and note keeping for accurate mouse inventory for the lab. In addition, you will work with others to perform experiments and assist in general laboratory operations. Strong organization skills are a must, as well as ability to handle live mice. Preference will be given to those with prior experience in a research laboratory and/or a strong academic foundation in biology.

Additional Key Elements/ Responsibilities:

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

• With moderate supervision, perform laboratory experiments including molecular cloning procedures, cell culture experiments, and quantitative assays of proteins and nucleic acids.
• Maintain accurate and complete written and electronic records of experimental procedures and results.
• Communicate research results to the Principal Investigator and in weekly group meetings.
• Assist with maintenance of laboratory equipment and inventory of laboratory materials.
• Help ensure compliance with institutional policies and regulatory reporting requirements.

Position Qualifications:

An understanding of biochemical principles and experience with biochemical and molecular biology methods is a plus, as are strong quantitative skills is preferred.

Term position is a staff position that exists for a period longer than six months but is not expected to last beyond one year. Although a position may exist for a specified or indefinite period, staff who accept term positions are not guaranteed employment for the entire period; they are employed for indefinite periods within the limit of the appointment. There are no guarantees of continued employment, either within the term or when the term ends.
