JOB SUMMARY:

The Medical Lab Scientist is responsible for performing complex laboratory tests on blood, body fluids, cells, and tissues.  Scientists will identify bacteria, parasites, and other microorganisms, analyze chemical content of fluids, and cross match blood for transfusion and organ transplantation, as well as aseptically prepare cells for use in cellular therapies.  The results of these tests are used in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. 

 

The Blood Bank at the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center is comprised of 2 critical areas:  The Apheresis Clinic provides clinical procedural services for both inpatient and outpatient populations and the Transfusion Medicine Laboratory provides pre- and post- transfusion testing, blood products, and Rhophylac.  The Blood Bank team is responsible for maintaining adequate inventory for blood product transfusion and performing all necessary manipulations of product to best meet patients' needs. 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or Clinical Laboratory Science required.   

MLS (ASCP) – Medical Laboratory Scientist, American Society of Clinical Pathology, CLT (HHS) Clinical Laboratory Technologist, Health and Human Services Certification, and/or category specific technologist certifications offered by the American Society of Pathology such as BB (ASCP), C(ASCP), H(ASCP), M(ASCP), and MB(ASCP) required. 

Must be ASCP Certified within one year of employment at the Penn State Hershey Department of Pathology. 

Good customer service and communication skills required

 

Must be self-motivated and able to prioritize work. 

 

 

 

 

Applicants trained outside of the United States must provide documentation of equivalency evaluation of their education and training to ensure it is equivalent to CLIA requirements.  The equivalency evaluations will be performed by a nationally recognized organization.  Ex:  National Association Credential Evaluations Services, Inc. (NACES), the Association of International Credential Evaluators, Inc. (AICE).  The applicants is responsible for paying the cost of the equivalency evaluation. 

 

 

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Laboratory experience in a Blood Bank setting preferred

 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

Able to stand frequently, walk frequently, sit constantly.

Able to lift/carry 0-20 lbs frequently; 21-50 lbs occasionally.

Able to push 0-50 lbs occasionally.

Able to pull 0-20 lbs frequently; 21-50 lbs occasionally.

Able to climb occasionally, reach constantly.

Able to use hands for simple/firm grasping.
