This position is in the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System, Pathology and Lab Medicine Service (P&LMS), North Little Rock, AR. The incumbent serves as a medical technician in the clinical laboratory with responsibility for performing urinalysis, processing specimens, entering accurate results, performing phlebotomy, and conducting the procurement of employee drug screens. This position is being recruited at the GS-05 grade level and is targeted at the full performance level of GS-6. Major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to: Processes all specimens according to strict guidelines to assure specimen integrity. Ensures responsibility for the proper packing and labeling of biological specimens being shipped to main laboratory. Processes specimens received for testing. This involves accessioning the specimens, determining the appropriate specimen preparation and creating the manifest for specimens sent to main laboratory. Uses a variety of common laboratory equipment requires the use of judgement and possess the ability to recognize obvious problems, identify cause, and make corrections. Ensures responsibility for ordering, receiving and storage of laboratory supplies. Performs cleaning of reusable medical equipment. Collects and processes blood and body fluid specimens, ensuring safety and non-traumatic processes are used with critical concern for the patient and the quality of the specimen with a minimal number of failures, patient bruising, or required re-sticks. Adheres to safety, infection control and universal precautions always while collecting samples. Instructs patients in proper sterile midstream urine collection, 24-hour urine collection, and collection of stool specimens for culture and sensitivity, ova and parasites and occult bloods. Assists in teaching laboratory and clinic personnel theoretical and practical aspects of phlebotomy, specimen collection and specimen requirements. Performs urinalysis testing and reporting results according to P&LMS procedures. Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level.
