This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. Learn more This position serves as Supervisory Medical Technologist in the Outpatient Specimen Collection and Reception department assigned to P&LMS at the Bay Pines VA Healthcare System. The Medical Technologist (MT) / Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) / Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) at the GS12 level serves as a supervisor of a large clinical section of a highly automated, complex and tertiary care medical center, which serves as a reference section for several Community-Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC) Laboratories. The incumbent at this level has full supervisory responsibility for a large staff of nonsupervisory personnel, including at least one subordinate team lead. Duties include, but are not limited to: Being responsible for the performance of a broad range of laboratory procedures including all testing and tasks of the medical laboratory technologists. Overseeing the performance of advanced and complex laboratory procedures; recognizing deviations from expected results; analyzing and correcting problems using scientific principles according to established policies and procedures. Planning and scheduling on-going work. Adjusts staffing levels or work procedures. Performing the full range of supervisory duties. Recommending appointments, planning and assigning work, giving advice and counsel, and evaluating work of subordinates. Choosing methods for achieving work goals, objectives, and management strategies. Working in conjunction with department leadership to eliminate waste and variation while increasing the effectiveness and efficiency of laboratory and hospital operations. Assisting in identification and selection of methods that will provide standardized work and assure the proper application of standards set by accrediting bodies that include JC, CLIA, and CAP. Ensuring instrumentation, reagents, supplies, instruments and the laboratory environment are maintained at the appropriate temperature, humidity, and atmosphere as applicable and appropriate. Evaluating and solving problems related to collection and processing of biological specimens for analysis. Instructing and assisting staff in specimen problem handling according to service procedures. Operating, calibrating, trouble-shooting malfunctions and repairs. Reporting test results timely. Monitors and reviews test turn-around-times data. Takes appropriate corrective action to prevent delays. Evaluates and implements new techniques and test methods in the laboratory in terms of equipment, method comparison, and establishment of reference intervals using statistical methods and theoretical knowledge. Interprets findings and makes recommendations as needed. Performs, documents, and reviews department test method validations and implementation. Trains and instructs new employees and students. Gives direction and guidance using principles of laboratory testing and service policy and procedures. Monitors the timely completion of all orientation, training, education and competency documentation for assigned staff. Participates in mandatory in-services regarding Safety, OSHA, Infection Control, etc. Manages competency folder for compliance. Adheres to and promotes practices and regulations governing safety and security in the workplace. Maintains confidentiality regarding administrative and patient issues. Adjusts staffing levels or work procedures to accommodate resource allocation decisions made at the executive level. Manages document control, develops performance standards, position descriptions and functional statements as needed, and is responsible for professional and administrative management of assigned area to include budget support or execution.
