The Lead Health Technician in the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service (P&LMS), under the Preanalytic Services Section Supervisor, at the C.W. Bill Young VA Medical Center. The incumbent will provide assistance to managers in performing analyses and/or evaluations of testing and specimen examination procedures with the responsibility for customer service and satisfaction associated with collection and receipt of specimens; assurance of integrity of specimens received; and preparation and processing of specimens prior to testing. The work performed will result in the accomplishment of the principal mission and the Service Line programs of P&LMS. Additional duties include, but are not limited to the following: Performs supervisory oversight for (30) Series 640 GS 5 Health Technicians, to include part-time and full-time positions. Distributes and balance the workload among employees in accordance with established work flow or job specialization, assure timely accomplishments of the assigned workload, and assure that each employee has enough work and are performing appropriately. Responsible for weekly Health Technician bench assignments, assuring that a fair and reasonable rotation is being used. Backup to PAS supervisor for all incident reports regarding specimen problems for resolution and completeness. Makes sure all specimen recollections, both outpatient and inpatient are done timely. Responsible for monitoring daily bench check-off lists, including the end of shift communication logs completion and hand off. Trains and instruct employees in specific tasks and job techniques and makes available written policies and procedures, reference materials and supplies. Orders, receives and accessions specimens (blood, urine, feces, assorted body fluids, etc.) after checking relevant documentation such as: patient identification, tests required, appropriateness of sample, urgency status of order, collection time, patient location, qualifying comments on order, order number etc. Builds and generates daily phlebotomy collection lists and labels, separates lists and labels by ward and coordinates distribution to phlebotomists. Communicates with ward personnel for any needed documentation on order; collates labels and/or request slips by wards; insures integrity of collection list vs. actual order and/or cancellations. Key operator in entire Referral lab process. Researches various tests for providers and gives pathologists all pertinent information so a correct, informed decision on testing can be determined. Maintains knowledge of and supports all practices as described in P&LMS Safety Manual, VAMC Emergency Plan, and VAMC Safety Manual. Follows all safety procedures including the proper use of PPE, disposal of needles and syringes, and waste materials. Follows procedures as outlined in the P&LMS Safety Manual for handling blood and body fluids, keeps work area clean, uncluttered, and decontaminated per unit procedure. Work Schedule: The expected tour of duty is Sunday - Thursday, 11pm - 7am. All positions include on-call, rotated weekends, scheduled holidays coverage and Disaster Rotation Schedule coverage as needed to meet the needs of the service and staffing challenges.
