The PLMS Supervisory Medical Technologist is responsible for the oversight and supervision of the Microbiology Department. The incumbent assures that all specimens are procured and processed, and specialty test results verified and released in a timely and efficient manner with minimal errors. He/she performs a full range of supervisory duties for one or more sections of the laboratory with primary responsibility for the Microbiology Department. ***If you are a Current Permanent Federal Employee or Past/Current/Upcoming VHA HPT Graduates, apply to vacancy CBST-11150129-21-LA*** Duties performed include, but are not limited to the following: Choses methods for achieving work goals, objectives, and management strategies; Performs a broad range of laboratory procedures including all testing and tasks of the medical laboratory technology occupation; Performs advanced and complex laboratory procedures. Recognizes deviations from expected results, analyzes and corrects problems using scientific principles and produces quality work; Receives and processes molecular, bacteriology and mycology culture specimens, reads cultures and slides, subcultures if required and performs bacterial identification and susceptibility testing on pathogenic organisms according to departmental SOPs; Prepares smears for Gram Stains and Wet Prep procedures; Performs Microbiology staining procedures according to departmental SOP, reads the completed stained smears microscopically and proficiently reports morphological observations and staining characteristics per departmental SOP; Establishes pre-analytic and post-analytical test processes for microbiology and molecular specimen collection, processing and testing to assure acceptable levels of performance; Evaluates and solves problems related to the collection and processing of biological specimens for microbial and/or molecular PCR analysis taking into account physiologic processes and requirements; Assures orientation, training, and competency assessment of any staff responsible for test performance within the Microbiology Department at proper intervals according to regulatory guidelines; Acts as liaison to other departments of the Medical Center for Microbiology specimen collection and processing or infection control concerns; fields telephone calls from providers and processes "add-on test requests" after confirming specimen adequacy; Implements and monitors quality management activities of microbiology and molecular specimen collection and processing; Participates in service and facility Performance improvement initiatives as needed and/or as assigned to meet patient care needs. Performs other related duties as assigned.
