The position is located in the Specimen Collection and Processing Section of the Northern California Health Care System in Oakland, California. **This announcement has been amended to extend the closing date. If you have already applied, you do not need to apply again. ** ***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** Major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: Draws blood from outpatients for requested laboratory tests. Verifies that patient is the individual denoted on the request and label all tubes with patient's identification. Verifies proper patient preparation and sample collection. Receives, processes and packs for shipment varied clinical specimens for reference laboratory testing. Selects, performs, evaluates and monitors the performance of test procedures using manual and/or automated techniques. Responds to reports and assists in emergency situations. .Observes and reports any physical or mental changes while patients are being drawn. Must follow first aid procedures for the care of patients who become sick, arrest, or faint while having blood drawn. Recognizes indicators of malfunction and evaluates validity of data. When operations fall outside acceptable limits, incumbent uses independent judgment in adjusting either the procedure or the mechanical devise used in the operation to bring into good quality control. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday - 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.
