The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) provides indirect care to patients by providing crucial diagnostic support to physician. This position is located in Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Service at Oklahoma City VA. Duties include but are not limited to: Performs a wide variety of procedures including complex analysis and infrequently requested tests. Identifies unusual results or conditions which may cause erroneous results. Collects and prepares specimen for testing, ensuring integrity and proper identification of specimen is maintained. Prepares reagents. Follows safety guidelines and policies for the safety of self and others. Participate in quality assurance reviews. Verifies correct instrument operation. Performs and calculates results for a variety of tests including non-routine procedures (i.e., coagulation tests, resolution of incompatible cross-matches, body fluid differentials, and immunofluorescent stains). Follows laboratory protocols for specimen collection. Explains specimen collection to patients with varying levels of understanding. Communicates with health care provider regarding test requests and other laboratory concerns. Instructs medical technician and phlebotomy students.
