The MITRE corporation is seeking to expand its work program into more deeply scientific work in support of HHS sponsors, including direct support for the US government in the area of therapeutic, molecular diagnostic, and/or vaccine development and deployment. This effort, in its initial phase, will involve a considerable degree of planning and preliminary exploration, leading to the generation and execution of direct work primarily in the future.  It is hoped that such efforts would aid in pursuit of critical direct work that serves the public interest, and advances the health of the Nation.  This position is proposed at the “fellow” level.

The successful candidate will be a mature, capable, and experienced thought leader empowered to shape and pursue a comprehensive vision of this area for MITRE and federal sponsors, with considerable autonomy and accountability.  It is understood that as a non-profit, non-partisan entity working in the public good, MITRE uses data to make informed decisions, backed by scientific rigor.

In particular, individuals with considerable professional experience in the development of therapeutics (e.g., small molecule, biologic, antibody-drug conjugates), molecular diagnostics, and/or vaccines are encouraged to apply.  Knowledge of more than one area is preferred, as is vaccine development.  Knowledge of the full discovery to delivery process, from target discovery through post-market surveillance and distribution is preferred.  Detailed knowledge of biosimilars is preferred for candidates claiming biologic therapeutics knowledge.

Specific duties may include the following:

  • Identify and secure opportunities to leverage therapeutic, diagnostic, or vaccine development processes to advance key government sponsor outcomes.  This might include activities such as therapeutic candidate portfolio management, relative prioritization of vaccine candidates, enhancing processes for repurposing of existing drugs for new indications, or optimal national stockpile development.

  • Identify and help to secure access to appropriate data sets.

  • Identify and pursue appropriate collaboration opportunities with external entities, as well as internal MITRE entities.

  • Assess population health and health payer system needs, as part of helping the government establish funding priorities.

  • Innovate on the use of data, analyses, and visualizations in service of the above objectives.

  • Establish a clear consensus with the leadership and executives within MITRE, and with major stakeholders in government agencies, regarding proposals.

  • Presenting and/or publishing externally.

  • A graduate or professional degree in an appropriate field, which may include medicine, biology, genetics, pharmacology, or equivalent.  Candidates with two terminal degrees (MD/PhD, MD/MBA, PhD/MBA, PharmD/MBA) are especially encouraged to apply.

  • Considerable, verifiable work and research experience with one or more therapeutic, diagnostic, or vaccine development programs, with efforts across multiple phases of the appropriate processes.  At least fifteen years of relevant experience is required.

  • Detailed knowledge of up-to-date processes for therapeutic, molecular diagnostic, and/or vaccine development.  For candidates claiming vaccine knowledge, this includes the processes used for COVID-19 vaccine development.

  • Verifiable commercial product launch experience for one or more of therapeutic, molecular diagnostic, or vaccine.

  • Demonstrated experience in establishing successful collaborations.

  • Experience working at, or with, NIH, FDA, BARDA, ASPR or other relevant government entities.  Those with direct NIH and FDA experience or exposure are especially encouraged to apply.  NIH experience with NCI, NHLBI, NIAID, or NCATS is preferred.

  • Relevant recent (i.e., preferably in the last 5 years) publications in peer-reviewed journals.

  • Existing relationships with one or more key stakeholders relevant to the specific duties.

MITRE is proud to be an equal opportunity employer. MITRE recruits, employs, trains, compensates, and promotes regardless of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, gender expression, sexual identity, disability, age, veteran status, and other protected status.
