| JOB SUMMARY:
Performs various tasks required for receiving, processing, and preparing patient tissue specimens for microscopic examination and analysis by the Pathologist. Prepares microscopic tissue slides for diagnostic/research purposes; performs tissue stains to assist in diagnosis; handles specimen accessioning; maintains laboratory and equipment. Reviews quality control, performs operation, maintenance and troubleshooting of histology instruments and equipment.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
1.1. Knowledge of the human anatomy
1.2. Knowledge of histology/cytology staining procedures
1.3. Knowledge of immunohistochemistry, instrumentation, special stains, immunofluorescence, microtomy, and Histology/cytology staining procedures
1.4. Ability to use a Cryostat
1.5. Ability to use computers (i.e. Microsoft Office, LIS systems)
COMPLEXITY OF WORK:
Within scope of job, requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment.
PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT:
Follows standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
Qualifications:
MINIMUM EDUCATION:
Completion of training in an NCCLS-approved Histology Technician program required.
Bachelor�s or Associate's degree.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:
1 year experience as Histotechnician.
REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURE:
State licensure where required.
REQUIRED COURSE(S) TRAINING:
PREFERRED CERTIFICATIONS/REGISTRATION:
Histotechnologist certification through ASCP (or equivalent) preferred.
