The Opportunity

Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare and Florida State University have a shared vision of expanding their research collaboration efforts and are establishing the role of Chief Clinical Research Officer to provide senior leadership and strategic direction in building and executing a clinical research strategy. This individual will need to build the research infrastructure and create a culture that promotes and encourages clinical research within Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare. This is an excellent opportunity for an innovative executive with a desire to lead a growing clinical, research enterprise, and serve as an integral leader for Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare and Florida State University during this moment of transformative change across the healthcare industry.

The Organization

Founded in 1948, Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare is a private, not-for-profit community healthcare system committed to transforming care, advancing health, and improving lives with an ultimate vision to elevate the standards of our healthcare practice, quality and innovation in our region. Serving a 17-county region in North Florida and South Georgia, Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare is comprised of a 772-bed acute care hospital, a psychiatric hospital, multiple specialty care centers, three residency programs, 35 affiliated physician practices and partnerships with Doctors’ Memorial Hospital, Florida State University College of Medicine, University of Florida Health, Weems Memorial Hospital and Wolfson Children's Hospital.

The Florida State University College of Medicine welcomed its first 30 students, the Class of 2005, in May 2001. Enrollment steadily increased to the current maximum class size of 120 new medical students a year. The first full class to be admitted, the Class of 2011, arrived in May 2007 as the college continued to grow toward full enrollment of 480. The college was designed as a community-based medical school. The students spend their first two years taking basic science courses on the Florida State University campus in Tallahassee and are then assigned to one of the regional medical school campuses for their third- and fourth-year clinical training. The College of Medicine has a strong interdisciplinary research culture that encompasses the spectrum from basic molecular processes to the study of ourselves and how we interact with communities. It is the home for several interdisciplinary translational research centers and institutes, core facilities that support investigators across the university, and hosts the University of Florida-Florida State University Clinical Translational Science Award.

The Position

The Chief Clinical Research Officer will facilitate research scholarship and extramural funding opportunities involving the two organizations and work collaboratively with Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare and Florida State University clinicians, research faculty, clinical staff and research administrators across disciplines. The Chief Clinical Research Officer will mentor researchers on strategies for developing meaningful pathways of scientific inquiry and in developing competitive grant applications to obtain research funding.

Qualifications

  • MD, DO, PhD, MD/PhD or DO/PhD with a solid record of scholarly achievement in extramural funding and publication in clinical research, preferably including NIH-funded grants and clinical trial management experience.

  • Working knowledge of federal regulations for Protection of Human Subjects, 45 CFR 46, 21 CFR 50, HIPAA, HITECH, FDA, Good Clinical Practice and ClinicalTrials.gov.

  • Minimum ten years of experience overseeing and conducting large scale or multi-site studies as a Principal Investigator at a university-based medical or public health school, health care institution or other clinical research institution.

Inquiries, Nominations and Applications

The Search Committee will begin reviewing candidates immediately and will continue until the position is filled. For priority consideration, please apply by March 1, 2021. Applications should include a detailed curriculum vitae and a letter of interest that highlight the applicant’s personal vision and relevant leadership experience. To ensure full consideration, inquiries, nominations and applications should be submitted electronically in confidence, to:
