You will be responsible for:
  • Maintains all essential job functions of the Medical Laboratory Scientist.

  • Coordinates the development & implementation of orientation & competency assessment for laboratory technical and support staff.

  • Enhances technical & professional knowledge in one or more aspects of laboratory medicine/leadership by participation in mandatory & continuing education opportunities.
  • Takes accountability as primary operator on a large instrumentation platform.  Responsibilities to include training, inventory management, procedure development, method comparisons and quality control review.
  • Uses the laboratory information system efficiently in producing & evaluating laboratory reports/documentation & obtaining information, in keeping with established protocols.
  • Evaluates new techniques, instruments and methods with attention to staffing, equipment, budgetary resources and implements changes when needed.
  • Examines existing processes and workflow to continually look for ways to improve and provide cost savings. 
  • Assist with the specialty areaâ™s budget process.  Provide necessary justification for capital requests. 
  • Evaluates inventory.  Interacts with vendors to ensure quality in supply.  Evaluates new products and kits to save money.
  • Recognizes and supports cost effective ideas and initiatives; educates associates in the application of sound financial and resource management principles.
  • Uses the LIS efficiently to order tests, enter results/documentation, & obtain information, in keeping with established protocols.
  • Continually evaluates workflow processes; develops and implements strategies to improve productivity.
  • Understands & utilizes department resources, including department manuals, administrative policy manuals, safety manuals, MSDS & reference material.
  • Utilizes Personal Protective Equipment and follows established chemical hygiene & biohazard protocols for self and associates within department. 
  • Monitors and assists in staffing decisions to meet workload within section area.
  • Assists associates in preparing for annual review by communicating in an honest and open manner.
  • Performs coaching/evaluation sessions with associates on a timely basis to foster staff development and growth in a fair and respectful manner.
  • Participates in and maintains competency requirements for self and those in department.
  • Promote staff development by providing technical in-services and/or other related continuing education programs.
  • Assists in the development of team processes and encourages team participation to maximize productivity and associate satisfaction.
  • Ensure laboratory is ready for inspections. (CAP, Joint Commission).
  • Monitors and ensures that downtime training is documented and staff trained to look for additional improvement opportunities.
  • Establishes and performs preventative/corrective maintenance of equipment and instrumentation. 
  • Reviews and provides any necessary corrective actions with Quality Control results.
  • Reviews and updates core lab using Lean Tools and principles. 
  • Develops, reviews, & revises laboratory policies, protocols & procedures.
  • Reviews and provides any necessary corrective actions with Proficiency Testing.  
 
Qualifications
What will you need?
  • Computer/Word Processing skills
  • Bachelorâ™s Degree
  • 2 to 5 Years of Position-Related Experience
  • Medical Technologist/Medical Laboratory Scientist (ASCP) certification or equivalent or advanced degree and able to meet CLIAâ™s 88 standards for high complexity testing
  • 5+ Years of Position-Related Experience Preferred

Job Summary:

The Lead Medical Laboratory Scientist works under supervision of the Director of Laboratory services.   Responsible planning, organizing, directing & controlling all activities associated with the laboratory section by shift.  Fosters the integration of the organization's vision and values, and accomplishes the mission and strategic plan through supervision of ALL staff resources.

Performs laboratory analysis requiring a complex network of steps & variables.  Maintains direct contact with daily operations to ensure quality and quantity of workflow.  Responsible for equipment, procedures and methods, which include education, training, development and budget performance.  Establishes & monitors quality improvement programs.  Assist in personnel selection and performance.  Sets priorities and establishes timetables for section.  Establishes policy for department, patient testing and resulting.  Strives to reduce costs for operating budget by using resources to work more efficiently.  Participates in departmental long-term planning and is responsible for section's role in implementation.
