Job Summary: Under general supervision, prepares tissue for pathologist’s examination by trimming, embedding, cutting, staining, and coverslipping tissue following established standards and practices.

Essential Functions:

 

  • Trim/process wet tissues in accordance with facility policies, manuals, and standard operating procedures
  • Embed, stain and coverslip slides with routine and non-routine stains
  • Introduction to immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence
  • Perform paraffin microtomy and begin frozen microtomy
  • Prepare and maintain paraffin, reagents and other solutions and stains according to standard formulas
  • Perform quality control and preventive maintenance on equipment related to duties
  • Maintain neat and legible records
  • Ensure adequate supplies and reagents necessary for the performance of essential functions
  • Operate slide scanner
  • Print slides for use by histologists
  • Prepare blocks for sectioning by histologists, including melting block edges and arranging blocks in order by their manifest
  • Other duties as required/delegated

 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

 

  • Ability to prioritize and work independently with minimal supervision using sound judgement
  • Proficient in the use of computers related to the performance of essential duties
