Health Scientist Administrator (Program Officer)

Division of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases

National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases

National Institutes of Health

U.S. Department of Health and Human Services

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID)—one of the largest Institutes of the National Institutes of Health (NIH)—is seeking exceptional applicants with diverse skill sets in drug product development to serve as a Program Officer in the Division of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (DMID). DMID supports extramural research via grants and contracts for the control and prevention of infectious diseases caused by virtually all human microbial pathogens (except HIV).

The program officer will manage a portfolio of contracts for discovery, preclinical and clinical development, and life cycle management of antibacterial, antiviral, and antitoxin therapeutic products. This position will also entail partnering with external collaborators as well as internal groups. The program officer will support planning and execution of contracts and serve as a key interface between a number of cross-functional areas within NIAID and with other U.S. government agencies and organizations (BARDA, DARPA, CARB-X, etc.). As such, prior experience in project management with deep understanding in therapeutic product development from discovery/preclinical through late stage development is critical. This position is integral in providing support for strategic development plans, nonclinical studies, and FDA-acceptable compliance of nonclinical studies that can be used to support product licensure.

Qualifications

Candidates must be U.S. citizens and demonstrate that they have worked independently in planning, organizing, and conducting biomedical behavioral health or health-related research as well as served effectively in research program administration in these fields.

Key Preferred Qualifications

  • A Ph.D. in chemistry, microbiology, biochemistry, or biology with postdoc or industry experience in the areas of microbiology, virology, multidrug-resistant bacteria, monoclonal antibody, or toxicology
  • Experience in product development for anti-infective therapeutics, vaccines, and monoclonal antibodies
  • Strong skills in relationship building, communication, and project management
  • Experience in managing government or non-government projects and working with multi-institution teams (academic, public, and private sector organizations)
  • Strong technical/medical writing capability
  • Demonstrated attention to detail
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and in a team-oriented and collaborative environment
  • Ability to conform to shifting priorities, demands, and timelines
  • Preclinical expertise in drug and/or vaccine development
