The goal of the Lab Tech Trainee program is to prepare staff for a future career as a Histology Tech or a Med Lab Scientist. The program requires a 2 year commitment. Responsibilities - While in the program, this position assists the technical laboratory staff. Responsible for the collection and receipt of biological specimens, proper entry into the computer system, preparation of samples for analytical testing, and/or distribution of these specimens to the proper analytical area. This includes responsibility for pre and post aspects of analytical testing. This position will also perform specified analytical testing as assigned. This position may perform duties associated with transfusion services. Other duties include answering phone calls, processing send out specimens, greeting and processing outpatients, and for ordering test in the computer system.
- Assists Laboratory MLS/MLT/Histology Techs with workflow. Maintains laboratory equipment and instrumentation to include loading reagents and performance of quality control. Interacts with patients and other health care professionals, and responds to routine inquiries.
- Focuses on quality by assuring that all work performed is accurate and complete. Completes documents legibly and accurately per site protocol. Maintains familiarity with departmental procedures. Uses appropriate documentation to record communications. Processes information by compiling, categorizing, calculating, tabulating, auditing, or verifying information or data.
- Performs specimen collection and patient preparation, ensuring correct patient and specimen identification and specimen integrity by using appropriate techniques as required. Aliquots, labels, and processes specimens according to established departmental procedures and practices. Verifies patient demographics, insurance, and diagnostic test information, and accurately enters data into appropriate systems to ensure accurate documentation and billing.
- Maintains clean and safe work environment per regulations. Maintains and assists with inventory management and ordering of supplies. Recognizes and provides input towards process improvement opportunities.
- Performs other technical support functions as determined by the department. Trouble shoots routine problems within their area of responsibility. Performs a variety of clerical duties such as answering the telephone, scheduling appointments, maintaining records, or relaying a message to the appropriate personnel.
Performs all functions according to established policies, procedures, regulatory and accreditation requirements, as well as applicable professional standards. Qualifications Senior or rising senior, or current BA/BS holder, in a clinically related biolgical science program. Requires at least a 2 year commitment. Must possess the intent to become a Med Lab Scientist, as well a desire to grow their career within the organization. Must be able to communicate effectively in both oral and written formats. Must be able to accurately read specimen labels and work with numbers to prevent mislabeling. Requires the ability to be attentive to details and to adhere to strict safety requirements for handling infectious agents. Must be able to work independently as well as in a team environment. Must be able to accommodate scheduling adjustments, off-shifts, holiday, and weekend work assignments. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Baccalaureate degree (BA or BS) in clinically related biological science. Experience in a clinical laboratory setting. Ability to utilize computer programs for reports and graphs. Additional related education and/or experience preferred.
