Summary

Under the supervision of a pathologist, assists with preparing and dissecting surgical specimens. Prepares and selects tissue samples for analysis. Record Findings.

Responsibilities

  • Responsibility for assuring appropriate specimen accession and correct numbering of all surgical specimens.
  • Responsibility for ensuring the proper preservation and fixation of the surgical specimens.
  • Obtainment of clinical history including previous pathology diagnoses, dissects and prepares tissue microscopic examination.
  • Under the direction of the pathologists, examines and describes the gross anatomic features of the surgical specimens, dissects and prepares tissue microscopic examination.
  • Obtainment of biological specimens for analysis (bacterial and fungal cultures, bile analysis, renal stone analysis etc.) and the ordering of special technique as directed by the pathologist such as flow cytmetry, special stains or immunoperoxidase stains.
  • Gross photography of all pertinent surgical specimens.
  • Responsibility for labeling, filing and maintaining the photographic kodachromes file.
  • Making formalin fixative when needed.
  • Ordering surgical pathology supplies when needed.
  • Maintaining in storage and proper condition, the required (CAP regulations) number if surgical specimens.
  • Preparation of the surgical specimens for disposal according to department policy.
  • Assisting in the organization and coordination of the anatomic pathology conference as needed.
  • Responsibility for updating the surgical manual and developing protocols for department policies.
  • Responsibility for maintain a current record of specimens received and released to cemetery for burial.
  • Records surgical specimens that are received with patient demographic or specimen related deficiencies for quality review.
  • The teaching and training of other hospital personnel such as Podiatrists, Medical Residents and on the job trained Surgical Pathology Physician Assistants.
  • Maintaining confidentiality of all patients, hospital and physician related information; demonstrates complete discretion when discussing patient information.
  • Ability to appropriately assess a situation, consider the alternatives and choose the correct course of action.
  • Reports all unusual pathology specimens to the pathologist and seeks guidance and direction as needed.


Qualifications:

Education

Required:

Bachelor�s/ Master�s degree from an accredited Pathology Assistant program. High School Diploma or GED equivalency.

Able to read, write and speak English.


Preferred:

Certification as a pathology assistant preferred.

Experience

Required: 6 months of pathology or laboratory experience


Physical Requirements


Hearing and visual acuity are essential to adequate job performance. The person should have dexterity to perform manual work to meet the necessary standards for the position. Physical health sufficient to meet the ergonomic standards and demands of the position and its location.
