Job Summary/Basic Function:
The Director of the OSCTR Scientific Writing Unit and a Scientific/Medical Writer is responsible for helping lead the Writing Unit, leading writing groups, working with junior investigators on manuscripts/grant applications, and producing accurate, clear, and interesting content for manuscripts, grants, reports, web-posting and presentations. Applies scientific principles and biomedical knowledge to understand, organize, and describe complex data for scientific, medical, and lay audiences. Coordinates input from a multi-disciplinary team while meeting tight deadlines. Helps write and proofread key documents. Maintains familiarity with relevant research, conducts literature reviews, and manages references. Assists with the design, development, and selection of scientific illustrations, tables, and figures. Submits manuscripts and tracks manuscript status from conceptualization through publication. Identifies funding opportunities. Maintains boilerplate text describing facilities, resources, and standard procedures. Summarizes research results for lay audiences and community stakeholders. Minimum Qualifications:
Ph.D. in Immunology or in related field and/or at least four years of related experience and/or training. Ability to meet tight deadlines and work independently on complex tasks. Attention to detail. Excellent communication skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. Ability to read, analyze and interpret an extensive variety of scientific, technical, financial, and legal documents. Ability to deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Preferred Qualifications:
Immunology and/or clinical rheumatology experience is a plus. AMWA certification is preferred. Previous experience with statistics and scientific and/or grant writing strongly preferred. Proficiency in EndNote and GraphPad Prism.

Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee is frequently required to sit and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision and ability to adjust focus.
