The George Mason University, Center for Applied Proteomics and Molecular Medicine in the College of Science invites well-qualified candidates to apply for an Assistant Lab Manager position in the Clinical Proteomics Lab. George Mason University has a strong institutional commitment to the achievement of excellence and diversity among its faculty and staff, and strongly encourages candidates to apply who will enrich Mason’s academic and culturally inclusive environment.

About the Position:
This position is in the clinical proteomics laboratory to provide COVID-19 testing, with the possibility of pivoting to proteomic research. The Assistant Lab Manager will work somewhat independently to design, organize, and conduct high complexity COVID-19 testing using established protocols and procedures, and in some cases, design new protocols.

Considering the nature of COVID-19 diagnostic testing, the position requires an individual who has demonstrated proficiency in laboratory skills and management. Applicants must have the ability to perform high-complexity laboratory testing, including qRT-PCR, ELISA, and manual pipetting. Medical Laboratory Scientist or Medical Technologist certification (ASCP) is preferred or an equivalent combination of education and experience in a regulated laboratory. The selected candidate is expected to be open to learning new techniques and working in a collaborative and interdisciplinary environment.

The duration of the appointment is 1 year and subject to renewal, dependent on satisfactory performance and continuation of funding.

Responsibilities:
Responsibilities include COVID-19 diagnostic testing, staff scheduling, inventory, reagent preparation, quality control, quality improvement, and research and development activities commensurate with a MS level. Specific tasks include qRT-PCR, ELISA, specimen processing, data analysis, training new employees, troubleshooting, competency assessments, staff scheduling, and quality improvement activities. The Assistant Lab Manager will also communicate daily operational issues with staff, consultants, laboratory director, and medical director.

Required Qualifications:

  • Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States. Sponsorship is not available for this position;
  • Completion of a BA/BS in biochemistry, biological science, or related field prior to the start date in the position;
  • Board certification as a Medical Technologist, Medical Laboratory Scientist, or Clinical Laboratory Scientist;
  • 3 years’ experience in clinical laboratory operations and proficiency testing;
  • Experience in qRT-PCR, and laboratory management;
  • Proficiency in data analysis using Excel or spreadsheet applications;
  • Proficiency in the use of personal computer, word-processing applications;
  • Demonstrated scientific writing ability;
  • Excellent communication skills in oral and written English.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of method validation and verification for laboratory developed tests;
  • Knowledge of LIMS validation;
  • Knowledge of western blotting, laser capture microdissection, or immunohistochemistry;
  • Experience with robotic liquid handling;
  • A strong background in statistical analysis is desirable.

Special Instructions to Applicants:
For full consideration, applicants must apply at https://jobs.gmu.edu/; complete and submit the online application; and upload a cover letter, resume, and a list of three professional references with contact information.

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability or veteran status, or any characteristic protected by law.
