Overview

M Health Fairview has an immediate opening for a Mohs Technician at M Health Fairview's Wyoming Lakes Clinic located in Wyoming, MN.

The MOHS Technician is responsible for preparing and processing frozen tissue specimens for microscopic evaluation and review by the Mohs surgeon ensuring appropriate quality controls and logs, maintaining MOHS laboratory equipment, and ensuring laboratory compliance with CLIA and other regulations. The MOHS Technician possesses working knowledge of the laboratory, performs routine and specialty procedures, recognizes problems, identifies basic causes, and makes corrections using established protocols. The MOHS Technician may assist the physician with surgical cases as needed and works directly under physician supervision.

This is a 1.0 FTE (80 Hours Per Two Week Pay Period), benefits-eligible opening.

Responsibilities/Job Description

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Prepare surgery suites, prep patients, and assisting the surgeon through during procedures.
  • Receives and organizes incoming specimens.
  • Properly performs grossing techniques to ink and embed tissue ensuring complete representation of vital surgical margins and maintain proper orientation.
  • Prepares sections of human tissue for immediate examination using rapid tissue processing and frozen section technique to freeze, cut, mount and stain tissue specimen received from surgery.
  • Perform initial screening under microscope to ensure tissue preparation meets laboratory requirements.
  • Perform immunohistochemical staining
  • Reports deviations from norm or any abnormalities to the Mohs surgeon for further study.
  • Documents daily equipment maintenance and temperature checks.
  • Reports any needed repairs to the unit Manager.
  • Performs Quality Assurance testing as specified in the Laboratory Procedures.
  • Orders reagents and all other laboratory material to ensure adequate supplies.
  • Evaluates equipment and reagent systems as specified in the Laboratory Procedures.
  • Maintains manual and computerized logbooks and slide files.
  • Maintains Laboratory Procedures in compliance with CLIA and State of Minnesota.
  • Performs complex histological procedures and analyzes and corrects problems using scientific principles. Analyzes and records data.
  • Performs instrument maintenance, utilizing established protocols.
  • Works within defined technical processes and procedures or methodologies and may help resolve appropriate approach for new assignments.



Qualifications
Education:

Preferred Education

Graduate from a Histology Technician program (2 yr.) with an Associate Degree in anatomic laboratory science which

includes the completion of an internship.

Licensure/Certification: Minimum License/Certification/Registration

Graduated from an accredited Medical Assistant Program.

Preferred License/Certification/Registration

HHS approved laboratory certification, HT (ASCP).

Experience: Minimum Experience

2 years patient care experience as a Medical Assistant, LPN, or working in a lab setting in a dermatology/Mohs

clinical setting.

6-24 months of training/experience as a Mohs Technician and demonstrated proficiency in Mohs cutting and staining technique as approved by the Director/Chief of Mohs Surgery at time of hire Demonstrated ability to perform and troubleshoot the Hematoxylin and Eosin stain used in Mohs

surgery specialty area.

Preferred Experience

3-5 years of previous experience in a laboratory setting preferred.

Proficiency in frozen tissue sections & CLIA standards.

Additional Requirements:

Ability to work in a fast pace, high volume Mohs department

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.

Ability to write simple correspondence.

Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

Must be willing to work in a Labor Management Partnership environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

Certified Histologic Technician or Histologic Technologist by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or the equivalent society, as approved by the Chief of Pathology or the Mohs Surgeon/ Mohs Lab Director preferred.
