The following provides a general description of duties and a more specific description of requirements for the Medical Technologist, Laboratory Information Systems. The Medical Technologist, Laboratory Information Systems, will be responsible for an information system serving a full-scale public health laboratory. Incumbents have overall responsibility for planning, organizing, directing, and controlling the work of the laboratory information system. The Medical Technologist, Laboratory Information Systems, reports to the Public Health Lab (PHL) Director for professional oversight and direction.
The duties of the Medical Technologist, Laboratory Information Systems include, but are not limited to:
Analyzes, designs, and formats new or revises existing laboratory information system applications and associated test code definitions for analytical tests of COVID-19 specimens.
Develops, designs, and formats management reports utilizing a report-writer program.
Implements, modifies, and supports electronic interfaces linking the laboratory information system to other information systems or instruments.
Designs and formats laboratory information system applications and conducts system-verification tests to ensure the operational accuracy of data transmission related to database/client and equipment interfaces and test code reproducibility.
Modifies parameters of existing laboratory information applications to conform with updated COVID-19 test methodology or standard value ranges.
Maintains and updates the master test file, user and client profiles, procedure and security-clearance files, and access user levels.
Develops and documents backup procedures to ensure the viability and accessibility of laboratory information and operations in the event of a system malfunction.
Assists in conducting training programs for laboratory personnel in the use of the laboratory information system.
Complies with DPH training regarding confidential information related to personal information.
Other duties as assigned.
Two years’ experience as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist or Public Health Microbiologist in a Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) – certified laboratory.
Licensed or certified by the California Department of Public Health as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist, Limited Clinical Laboratory Scientist, Clinical Microbiologist Scientist, or Public Health Microbiologist.
Working knowledge and experience using Sunquest laboratory information system.
