The Department of Pathology and Anatomical Sciences at the University of Missouri School of Medicine is seeking an academically-oriented clinical pathologist with experience or with specialty training in Transfusion Medicine.
The Transfusion Service oversees the Blood Banks at both University Hospital and Women’s & Children’s Hospital which have issued approximately 14,000 blood products and completed more than 20,000 Blood Bank related tests during calendar year 2019. The Transfusion Medicine pathologist will have medical oversight over the Blood Bank which is required for continuous accreditation by the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB) and as part of the larger clinical laboratory accreditation by the College of American Pathologists. The Transfusion Medicine specialist will provide interpretations for complex cross-match work-ups, will nurture and grow the established Blood Management Program, will provide leadership about hospital wide blood product utilization, and will provide interdepartmental expertise to the Apheresis and Blood Cell Exchange Programs at the University Hospital. The clinical pathologist will also serve as Medical Director for some of the other 18 clinical laboratory sections – to be determined by additional expertise and experience. The Director is expected to contribute to the active teaching program of residents in clinical pathology with emphasis on Transfusion Medicine and other areas.
