In concert with the Executive Director of Pathology, this position is responsible for directing and leading certain assigned Technical areas of the Department of Pathology to ensure that technical, fiscal and human resources are effectively managed to provide excellent ancillary services that exceed the prevailing “market standard”. Assigned Technical areas must meet all regulatory standards and the Dept. of Pathology must fulfill its role in accomplishing all Medical Center goals and objectives. Additionally, the Director should be knowledge in all laboratory areas which do not perform patient testing: Central Processing, Hospital Client Services, and Phlebotomy Services.
The Department of Pathology provides full service laboratory testing to Long Beach Medical Center, Miller Children’s’ and Women’s Hospital, and core laboratory testing for Orange Coast Medical Center and Saddleback Medical Center. The department performs reference testing for related and non-related entities and for limited outreach clients. Laboratory services include Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology, Molecular Pathology, Microbiology, Histology, Cytology, Newborn Screening and Serum Bank Repository, Blood Bank and Blood Donor Center. This laboratory performs most of all tests requested and contracts with selected reference laboratories for the remaining esoteric testing volume. Support areas of the Dept/ of Pathology which do not perform patient testing but are required for operational reasons include: Central Processing, Hospital Client Services, Inpatient Phlebotomy, and POCT
Essential Functions and Responsibilities of the Job
Develop and direct policy and procedures. Serves as a resource for the interpretation of policies, philosophy and strategy.
Maintain adequate communication with staff and serve as liaison with department and medical staff.
Supportive and effective troubleshooter in areas of responsibility for problem solving process, system, and technical issues.
Regulatory compliance, Safety and Quality Assurance activities for the Department of Pathology.
Participates in department’s LEAN Management Systems and documents accomplishments.
Direct operations and activities to include overall administration, recruitment, hiring, training and development and implementation of the annual operating budget.
Coordinate, evaluate and make recommendations for capital acquisitions, operating budget, and space planning needs.
Minimum of 3 years management experience in a hospital laboratory
Bachelor’s Degree in an allied health field
Certified and Licensed Clinical Laboratory Scientist in the state of California
