If you are passionate about helping your community and making a difference in people’s lives, we want you to join our growing team! Lions Eye Bank of Wisconsin is currently looking for a Laboratory and Processing Technician to help spread our mission.

Lions Eye Bank of Wisconsin is a nonprofit organization and team of professionals and volunteers, dedicated to the mission of restoring the gift of sight through recovery, transplantation and education. Our ultimate goal is to improve people’s quality of life through the gift of sight.

Position Objective 

The Laboratory and Processing Technician is responsible for (but not limited to) the timely completion of ocular tissue processing in compliance with LEBW SOPs, EBAA Medical Standards, and FDA Regulations. Additional responsibilities include: laboratory procedures, tissue evaluations, blood packaging, consultation with Medical Directors, and distribution functions.

Essential Duties of the Position:

  1. Responsible for processing donated human tissue intended for transplantation, research or education.
  2. Processed tissue according to surgeon parameters.
  3. Performs tissue evaluations (slit lamp, specular microscopy, OCT).
  4. Prepare documentation of lab findings by collecting, analyzing, and documenting serology results and donor information.
  5. Packaging and distribution of eligible tissue for transplant, research, and education.
  6. Ensure that all laboratory/quality control activities performed are documented in a thorough, accurate, and professional manner.
  7. Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications.
  8. Foster a spirit of cooperation with co-workers by being a leader and a trainer.
  9. Establish and maintain effective/positive communications with all LEBW staff.
  10. May be required to perform duties on weekends.
  11. Perform other duties/tasks as assigned.

Ancillary Functions

  • Perform receipt and inspection of critical and non-critical lab and recovery supplies.
  • Maintain safe and clean work environment by complying with rules and Regulations.
  • Adhere to infection- control and hazardous waste policies and procedures.
  • Clean, maintain, and perform scheduled maintenance lab equipment.
  • Work cooperatively with other departments.
  • Resolve medical record discrepancies by collecting and analyzing data.
  • Must maintain confidentiality and integrity of all donor-related information and business practices.
  • Maintain communication with eye bank by carrying working cell phone and being available as needed, checking work e-mail on a scheduled basis.
  • Contribute to quality initiatives by participating in quality improvement programs.
  • Document statistical data.
  • Adhere to quality control policies and procedures.

Minimum Education & Experience Requirements

·         Skills, and knowledge of Ophthalmology or eye bank procedures a plus

·         Knowledge and experience in biologics, medical device manufacturing,              or cleanroom/aseptic environments a plus

·         Knowledge of EBAA, FDA or AATB requirements a plus

·         Must be able to reason independently and work with minimal guidance.

·         Must possess excellent organizational skills and strong attention to                  detail.

·         Knowledge of human anatomy preferred.

·         Good mechanical aptitude is a plus

·         Valid Wisconsin Drivers’ License.

·         High School/GED degree required.

·         Two-year degree or more in Physical or Life Sciences or Healthcare is a plus.

          Experience in scientific or medical field.

          Two to four years’ experience in similar technical position.

          Knowledge of medical terminology.

Physical/Environmental Demands of the Position

  • Physical Activities – reaching, grasping, feeling, talking, seeing, hearing, writing, precision dexterity, driving, and walking.
  • Level of Physical Requirements – moderate work. Must be able to lift 50 pounds independently.
  • Environmental Conditions – generally laboratory, but may recover eye tissue in hospitals, ME/Coroner offices and funeral home as required.
  • Exposure to computers, cell phones, and other office equipment. Exposure to cornea preservation media, and other recovery supplies, and reagents.

Lions Eye Bank of Wisconsin (LEBW), a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, is a team of professionals and volunteers dedicated to the mission of restoring the gift of sight through recovery and transplantation of corneas, research to advance the knowledge and treatment of eye diseases, and education to increase donations, LEBW fulfills this mission by procuring, processing and distributing eye tissue to corneal transplant surgeons, researchers and teachers. Equally important is our commitment to education through our network of medical professionals, Lions and Lioness Club members and other volunteers who give generously of their time and resources. LEBW continues its commitment to people who receive transplants and those who will benefit from the research. The ultimate goal of LEBW is to improve people’s quality of life through the gift of sight.
