JOB TITLE: Phlebotomist II

LOCATION: Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center

DEPARTMENT: Laboratory Medicine - Lab Collections

WORK SCHEDULE: Days

WORK TYPE: Part Time

 

JOB SUMMARY:

Phlebotomist II has at experience and can independently perform venipunctures and skin punctures on all age groups, from neonates through adults, to obtain blood specimens, knowledge of processing specimens

for analysis, and the ability to utilize the appropriate computer systems to register patients, facilitate billing, accession laboratory specimens, and provide information. Phlebotomist II is responsible and accountable for

performing a wide range of tasks to provide a specimen of highest analytical quality for testing and accurate information for the Geisinger Health System and Geisinger Medical Laboratories' clients, including

performing duties to support the goals and objectives of Geisinger in its efforts to provide quality patient care and patient satisfaction.

 

Phlebotomists are responsible for an interpersonal relationship with the patient who they are meant to collect blood samples from. It’s the duty of a phlebotomist to make patients feel relaxed and protected while

collecting a blood sample. The ability to explain the blood drawing process to patients and to show a comforting attitude toward patients creates an amiable environment.

 

COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS:

Demonstrates ability to read, write, and perform simple mathematical calculations.

 

Demonstrates ability to effectively communicate with patients and health care professionals.

 

Demonstrates basic PC navigation.

 

Demonstrates use of electronic health record and laboratory information systems preferred.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma or equivalent required.

 

Minimum 12 months of previous Phlebotomy experience that includes venipuncture, skin puncture, patient preparation and post collection transportation/processing.

 

OR

 

Successful completion of a NAACLS (National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences) accredited Phlebotomy Training program.

 

Valid Pennsylvania Driver's license required. Motor Vehicle Record Check may be required.

 

Phlebotomist III qualifications will be considered at appropriate compensation.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSCIAL DEMANDS:

Work is typically performed in a laboratory environment. Possible exposure to infectious diseases. May handle hazardous chemicals. Must comply with applicable safety procedures. Physical demands: Standing - remaining on one's feet in an upright position. Sitting - maintaining concentration while sitting for prolonged periods. Handling - seizing, holding, grasping, or otherwise working with hands. Fingering - picking, pinching, or otherwise working with fingers. Vision requirements - able to pass standardized color vision test. Protective equipment (as required by test performed) - eye protection, face protection, lab coat, non-sterile medical gloves.
