In this newly created role, University Hospitals (UH), a $4 billion, 18 hospital health system in Cleveland, Ohio seeks an accomplished administrative executive to lead the business, clinical operations, and strategic planning for the clinical laboratories and pathology services at UH.
The VP will join pathology at an extraordinary time in its history as it experiences tremendous growth and evolves into an integrated service line across UH's extensive health network. UH offers the full spectrum of clinical laboratory diagnostics with 32 million Clinical Pathology and 75,000 Anatomic Pathology tests annually across multiple hospitals and outpatient clinic sites. Anatomic Pathology alone has experienced 40% growth in the past year. The scope of services is becoming more complex and sophisticated, through programs such as expansion of Next Generation Sequencing-based diagnostic programs, total laboratory automation in microbiology, and digital pathology. UH is also investing in a new, state of the art facility to house all clinical areas of the pathology department.
Working closely with the Chair of Pathology and other institutional leaders, the VP will manage an annual operating budget of $100 million and oversee daily operations for 450 staff members. He/she will direct, plan, and manage the comprehensive business affairs of pathology and lab services across the system, including management and analysis of budgets, development of new laboratory services, human resources, quality improvement initiatives, research activities, training and development, facilities management, strategic planning and regulatory compliance. The VP is expected to provide strong administrative leadership in dealing with a complex, multi-facility enterprise and will demonstrate the business savviness to play a major, proactive role in dealing with the ever-changing and often unpredictable fiscal pressures that face all leading academic medical centers today.
The VP is expected to directly interact, and negotiate, with executives at the highest levels of administrative leadership across the health system. With a high degree of authority and, in partnership with the Chair, the VP will direct the strategic agenda, program and policy, and development and operational planning for the service line, as well as have oversight for all administrative functions.
SUMMARY OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
The VP will provide executive management for pathology and lab services, with a particular focus on:
Responsibility for the administrative, fiscal, human resources, quality improvement, research activities, strategic planning and regulatory compliance function for the Clinical Laboratories and Pathology services across the UH System. Includes:
Developing standards and guidelines for department functionality across the system.
Establishing an evidence based practice model for future growth.
Ensuring system wide compliance with Joint Commission, CAP, ASHI, AABB, CMS and other pertinent regulatory agencies and requirements.
Overseeing budgets for system Clinical Lab and Pathology entities.
Working collaboratively with the Chair, Vice Chair, Institute Director, Division Directors, Section Heads, Community Laboratory Directors, Managers, and Hospital Presidents. Includes:
Providing oversight and coordination for community hospitals, ambulatory sites and CMC Lab Services.
Communicating effectively with Sr. Leadership on opportunities for improvement and future growth of lab services.
Overseeing administrative and technical staff for support of both technical and professional services in Pathology, works with Chairman to ensure coordination of faculty professional efforts and medical director oversight functions with laboratory managers and technical operations.
Responsibility for development and management of new and existing Lab Services across the system. Includes:
Collaborating effectively with Sr. Management at all UH sites on ways to increase profitability, upgrading equipment, assessing staffing levels, assessing management skills of staff and recognizing opportunities for growth.
The ability to plan, coordinate, direct and evaluate a variety of lab functions, new and existing, to be profitable now and in the future.
Creating and strengthening community partnerships to enhance the potential patient base for services.
Building relationships with educational institutions to build a pipeline for future employees. Includes:
Establishing system wide training and development programs for new and existing lab staff.
Collaborating with colleges in planning lab related programs and driving system clinical opportunities.
Working with colleges to aid current non-clinical system employee's opportunities to obtain lab related education and training.
He/she will be responsible for leading services across the UH health system, which include:
Driving the planning, growth and development, and operational management of Pathology services including quality of service and testing accuracy.
Translates goals into Pathology and Diagnostic Institute service goals and leads management team in setting individual goals to support organization's objectives.
Develops business and operational plans for Pathology/clinical laboratory services with integration into Diagnostic Institute goals, including annual department budgets and multi-year budget proposals for new programs.
Assesses quality and efficiency of Pathology clinical laboratory operations with sophisticated laboratory technical insight to develop plans to improve operations.
Initiates ideas and collaboratively implements plans for business development and volume growth
Collaborates with physicians, faculty, and management staff of other service lines, clinical and support departments to ensure the effective coordination and provision of services within and between service lines, including the effective interaction between physicians (including medical directors) and technical staff (including laboratory managers).
Coordinates operations at different sites involved in patient care, including the transfer of specimens between sites for diagnostic operations.
Coordinates the efforts of lab managers and staff at different sites to ensure synergy, collaboration and planning for effective workforce utilization across sites
Maintains constructive relations with business partners
Demonstrates initiative in administrative leadership within the Health System and positively represents and promotes UH within the community
Oversees the delivery of patient care within Pathology services ensuring optimal levels and continuous improvement of clinical and service quality for all customers.
Ensures compliance with State and Federal laws, accreditation, professional and regulatory agency standards including quality assurance, and licensure requirements
Monitors quality standards as established for Pathology services for the Health System and ensures compliance with these standards
Initiates quality improvement efforts to continuously improve quality
Initiates process improvement efforts to ensure optimal coordination of patient care and efficiency of patient care access and process
Develops and leads team in meeting goals for improvement of patient satisfaction
Promotes a customer service culture
Oversees the delivery of Pathology services and ensures optimal levels and continuous improvement of testing and service quality within the Health System for all customers (internal and external)
