Sterile Processing Technician

As a Sterile Processing Technician with Northwell Health, the role you perform will be essential to the operation of our hospitals and other medical facilities. You will help ensure that the instrumentation and equipment used within our facilities is clean and safe to use. Your diligence and dedication are essential to our success in preventing patients from getting an infection when receiving care. In this position, you will be responsible for:
Decontaminating surgical and other reusable instruments, containers, equipment, supplies, and linen using the washer sterilizer, steam or gas sterilizers according to established procedure
Checking graphs, indicators and cultures to ensure proper quality control
Making rounds throughout the Medical Center to collect used equipment, supplies and instruments
Preparing supplies, instruments, dressings and treatment trays according to the designated procedures using the specified wrap, labels and seals
Maintaining adequate levels for inventory within the department and other areas being supplied
Maintaining and issuing portable apparatus such as orthopedic traction and appliances, surgical and emergency equipment, etc.
Preparing and checking case carts according to the requisition for the specific surgical case by supplying sterile equipment and materials along with specific trays and instruments needed for that surgical procedure
Receiving and filling requisitions from departments or nursing units and recording appropriate charges
Maintaining Central Supply in a clean and orderly condition
Keeping abreast of current developments in Central Supply and Sterilization techniques
Assisting in ordering and maintaining specific supply levels for special outside orders.
Checking and documenting all sterilization records on a daily basis
Verifying that spore tests are performed on all sterilizers in compliance with JCAHO requirements
Logging all gassed supplies that receive a reaction on a daily basis
Monitoring outside reusable supplies and processing them in a timely manner
Sterile Processing Technician Qualifications:
High School Diploma or equivalent
Sterile processing certification (CRCST or CSPD) OR provisional certification (CRCST)
Minimum of one (1) year related surgical or central service experience
Numerical and clerical ability required in order to assemble the correct number of items for dressings and treatment trays, as well as specific instrumentation for operating room and to prepare records and floor charges
Ability to handle various articles for cleaning, sterilizing and packaging
Capability for routine and organized activities that deal with cleaning, sterilizing and assembling hospital sterile supplies
Ability to follow specific instructions and procedures and to work cooperatively with nursing units
Ability to transport supplies, equipment and materials in case carts. Ability to maneuver carriages to and from the sterilizers.
Ability to communicate effectively and follow instructions
