Job Summary The HISTOTECHNICIAN performs technical procedures in the histology section of the laboratory including fixes, sections and stains tissue.
Sections tissue using a microtome insuring correct thickness, without sectioning artifact, and places tissue on a glass slide for staining.
Embeds tissue to insure correct orientation and positioning for sectioning.
Process tissue to insure adequate fixation.
Provides for the H&E staining of tissue and for coverslipping.
Performs quality control functions according to section guidelines.
Performs and documents instrument function verification, preventative maintenance, and troubleshooting on all equipment to ensure proper operation.
Actively participates in laboratory programs established for the purpose of maintaining/improving the quality of laboratory services, individual growth, and safety in the work environment
Ensures compliance with CAP regulations, hospital compliance programs, the Laboratory Safety Management Plan, departmental policies and procedures.
Assists in maintaining current policy and procedure manuals to aide employees in performing defined protocols.
Performs filing duties as necessary.
Education Other HT/HTL(ASCP) registry eligible Required
Experience 2 years in histology or successful completion of NAACLS Accredited Histotechnician program within last 5 years Required Other Ability to read English language Ability to write English language Required
