POSITION SUMMARY

Responsible for the development of departmental strategic and operational planning; maintain accreditation; and evaluate the general effectiveness of the Medical Sciences (the “MS”) Programs. Demonstrate aptitude to implement instructional strategies that advance student learning through curriculum and strategic goals of the programs; and advance the mission of Marion Technical College (the “College”).

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES, FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Respond to inquiries from students, College employees and customers in a timely manner while maintaining confidentiality and privacy in accordance with the College, HIPAA, FERPA, student records, and any other protected documentation.

  2. Develop and maintain a team-based, customer service culture within the department. Monitor departmental activities and customer satisfaction. Identify areas for improvement and implement a constructive plan to meet customer service standards.

  3. Assure that the appropriate department programs meet the accreditation and approval standards of the appropriate accreditation agency and other governing bodies; develop and advance the College, Medical Sciences programs, curriculum, faculty, students and policies in relation to accreditation requirements.

  4. Provide leadership to develop and fulfill the College and the department's mission, including all academic programming, new program development, communication with constituencies, clinical selections, enrollment management, evaluation and assessment of student learning, academic support services, curriculum development, program evaluation, and curricula.

  5. Investigate and implement learning programs and academic delivery methods, supervise departmental academic processes, improve the department student assessment plan, develop departmental projects consistent with academic objectives and policies. Establish and use program advisory committees to support and manage the department and coordinate faculty efforts to work with advisory committees.

  6. Demonstrate leadership and provide direction to market department programs and assist in the recruitment, admission, advisement and registration of students, in coordination with Admissions and Public Relations. Coordinate the articulation of department programs with high schools, colleges and universities.  Maintain appropriate and accurate files on all department activities, and course syllabi. Promote the Medical Sciencesprograms career areas and disseminate appropriate information. Schedule department meetings as required.

  7. Provide oversight for clinical practice including:  select and approve appropriate clinical practice sites; provide orientation and train on-site supervisors; verify successful completion of student requirements, i.e. physical requirements, drug screening, criminal background checks. Verify compliance of clinical practice experience with accreditation standards and provide oversight of the clinical practice including on-site assessment of student experiences and the quality of learning opportunities at least once during each term students are assigned to the directed clinical site.

  8. Travel to and act as liaison with outside clinical sites, health care organizations and agencies to develop and implement plans, arrangements and contracts for the program. Conduct, maintain and review program evaluations, assessment plans, accreditation reviews, and institutional program review, data, and associated policies and procedures.

  9. Teach courses in accordance with established objectives and syllabus; evaluate student learning. Provide continuity and reinforcement of the teaching/learning process throughout the curriculum. Collaborate with members of health agencies to maximize student learning while protecting patients. Develop, coordinate and maintain the department plan to assess student academic achievement.

  10. Conduct, maintain and review program evaluations, assessment plans, accreditation reviews, and institutional program review, data, and associated policies and procedures; develop schedules for all program operations including faculty instructional schedules, classes, student advising, clinical visits, meetings, accreditation preparation and reviews, etc.; manage program operations to sustain financial viability in accordance with institutional measures, including maintaining a sufficient student enrollment in the program. Provide quality instruction and assessment relative to the learning competencies defined by the College and the programs.

  11. Supervise department faculty and staff, organize and implement academic staff development programs and activities. Coordinate efforts with the Office of Human Resources to recruit, supervise and evaluate all instructional and non-instructional staff within the department to develop requirements and position descriptions; plan for succession; interview applicants for positions; recommend for hiring, promotion, or dismissal; and conduct and evaluate written performance appraisals completed on a timely, annual basis. Recruit and mentor community faculty.

  12. Communicate and organize curricular materials with community faculty members. Prepare course computer disks or binders containing teaching notes, handouts, quizzes, exams and any other supplemental teaching materials. Prepare activities for the student laboratory experience, in accordance with course syllabi.

  13. Plan, prepare and administer the departmental annual budget. Coordinate efforts with the Business Office to plan, acquire, maintain and secure inventory, facilities and equipment. Assist in the formulation, development, and implementation of policies and procedures and interpret those policies and procedures for faculty and staff.

  14. Advise and assist students with scheduling and registration for successful course degree completion, with guidance and academic advising. Maintain and make available a current schedule to accommodate student learning and advising needs, including office hours, on- and off-campus meetings, classes, clinical, etc. in accordance with the annual faculty service days’ schedule. Maintain user proficiency for software programs, systems, and databases used by the College.

  15. Flexibility to meet instructional classroom schedules at the facility and visit off-campus clinical sites, as needed. Ability to teach lecture and laboratory courses and operate laboratory equipment. Establish and monitor safety practices within the classroom and laboratory and at clinical sites. Manage the maintenance and inventory laboratory facilities and equipment; order materials necessary, through the Business Office – Business Portal purchase ordering system.

  16. Assist department faculty and staff to develop an educational plan to fulfill College and professional goals and/or meet regulations of accrediting agencies. Participate in developing and implementing in-service programs. Participate in Program and College activities to enhance teaching, learning, and support services provided to students, including student academic achievement in accordance with the College-wideassessment, strategic, and department plans.

  17. Create and pursue a plan to develop professional opportunities within the scope of work responsibilities, department, and College objectives. Maintain annual continuing professional education responsibilities as required by accreditation standards.  Open to pursuing developing education and knowledge base, which may include higher educational degrees, certifications, and advance current knowledge of and practice in the discipline. Demonstrate self-motivation and ability to research and continually update knowledge and skills, as well as provide input and accept additional and changing work responsibilities.

  18. Maintain liaison with colleagues in other institutions and actively participate in professional associations. Attend on- or off-campus College meetings and serve on departmental and College committees as assigned by the supervisor.

ACADEMIC WORKLOAD REQUIREMENTS

This position is expected to instruct a minimum of 7.50 contact hours per week, per academic term including summer.

QUALIFICATIONS

Master’s degree in a related health field and special certified training in Medical Laboratory Technology required; minimum of three years of generalist experience in Medical Laboratory clinical settings with demonstrated administrative and/or supervisor experience required. Exhibit excellent English, communication, and composition writing skills. Proficiency in Microsoft® Office programs (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and Outlook) with excellent computer and related technology skills required. Demonstrate the ability to work independently and complete projects with minimal direction and oversight. MT or MLS (ASCP) certification required. Minimum of three years teaching experience in a NAACLS accredited program. Knowledge of NAACLS accreditation and certification procedures required. Willingness to work an irregular schedule as assigned. Ability to successfully pass a background check, prior to and after employment. Valid driver’s license or dependable transportation required. 

ADA SPECIFICATIONS

This position is classified as Staff - Management, Professional, Administrative, and Support and will perform a wide range of professional and administrative support functions for the college, primarily in an office setting. Further information may be obtained from the Office of Human Resources.
