Clinical Director - Transfusion and Apheresis Services MetroHealth Medical Center Case Western Reserve University
Cleveland, Ohio; The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at MetroHealth Medical Center, a large, 700-bed hospital of Case Western Reserve University Medical School and the only Level 1 Trauma Center in northeastern Ohio, is recruiting a full-time pathologist with Blood Banking / Transfusion Medicine expertise to serve as the Medical Director of Transfusion and Apheresis Services for the MetroHealth System.
The laboratories at MetroHealth Medical Center provide approximately 2.6 million billable tests/year. The Blood Bank Laboratory and Transfusion Service is large and growing, with 115,000 tests performed, and 8,000 RBC, 2,500 plasma, 1,200 platelet, and 250 cryo units transfused annually. The Blood Bank and transfusion services support multiple MetroHealth System facilities and LifeFlight/Ground Transport bases, including the Level 1 trauma center, three Level III Emergency Departments, multiple infusion centers, a maternal-fetal medicine division, a neonatal intensive care unit, and an adult hematology/oncology service. The Apheresis Service supports 150 therapeutic apheresis procedures and 120 therapeutic phlebotomies annually. The Blood Bank and Transfusion Service is part of the MetroHealth System Laboratory which provides specialized testing services in Chemistry, Toxicology, Microbiology, Serology, Flow Cytometry, Hematology, Cytology and Surgical Pathology. The laboratory includes approximately 150 technologists, including supervisors, nine pathologists and four Ph.D.'s. The department has a fully accredited AP/CP residency program with eight residents, and two fellows, one in Surgical Pathology and one in Cytopathology.
M.D./D.O. with Board certification in Blood Banking/Transfusion Medicine and American Board of Pathology certification in Clinical Pathology and Anatomic Pathology.
Experience as a director or associate director of a laboratory division, preferably Blood Bank, including review of program operations to ensure that blood bank and apheresis programs meet regulatory requirements, clinical assay and systems development and validation, quality control and quality assurance, and medical consultation with health care providers.
Passionate teacher, actively involved in resident training in the Blood Bank and CP laboratories and an active participant in the CP residency curriculum, in accordance with the American Board of Pathology guidelines and requirements.
Record of commitment to research and scholarly activity
Experience in medical staff functions, working knowledge of hospital operations, quality improvement and strategic planning, and demonstrated ability to think strategically, critically and innovatively while supporting organization and department-wide initiatives.
Strong interpersonal skills, including empathetic and respectful listening and ability to interact with diverse employee, clinical and client population.
