HJF is seeking a Pathology Assistant to support the John P. Murtha Cancer Center located at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) in Bethesda, Maryland. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to the John P. Murtha Cancer Center.
Responsible for performing biospecimen collection in support of multiple Murtha Cancer Center research protocols. Performs routine surgical gross dissection in addition to the collection, archiving and transfer of fresh tissue and blood specimens for research. Assists in the administering of activities required for a successful tissue bank repository.
Prepares and maintains standard operating procedures for laboratory procedures, quality control procedures, laboratory equipment use and maintenance.
Performs technical duties of Pathologists’ Assistant which include standardized and complex anatomic pathology procedures; performs administrative duties required by the project.
Controls laboratory supplies inventory. Ensures that MCCB administrative procedures and applicable DPALS procedures are applied at all times.
Provides Pathologists’ Assistant level support for the Anatomic Pathology Laboratory. In this capacity, performs technical duties of a Pathologists’ Assistant which includes performing gross analysis of standardized anatomic pathology specimens ranging from biopsies and small resections to larger, complex cancer cases and performs administrative duties required for these procedures. Also provides assistance and guidance to Pathology residents in their surgical pathology training.
Assists in the preparation and collection of biospecimens for the Biobank by following standardized departmental procedures while providing communication with attending pathologists and residents.
Maintains and implements tools to track and monitor the Biobank collections.
Ability to operate and maintain lab equipment, maintains equipment in good working order, orders supplies and equipment repairs as needed.
Maintains accurate records, tabulates and organizes data.
Handles and processes human samples e consistent with departmental SOPs.
Ensures compliance with established laboratory practice and safety guidelines.
Must have ability to design, develop and optimize SOP, laboratory and QC procedures. Must have strong organizational skills; ability to work independently and exercise good judgment.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Thorough knowledge of health care and patient care; excellent communication and interpersonal skills; ability to maintain accurate and complete files on patients; ability to perform complex patient care procedures
Minimum Education/Training Requirements: Master's degree in health care science; must have ASCP Certification
Minimum Experience: Graduate of Pathologist Assistant Program; 4 to 6 years experience as a Pathologists’ Assistant preferred.
Physical Capabilities: Requires long periods of standing; may require lifting and bending to assist patients
Work Environment: Clinical or hospital environment.
