Manages technical functions in laboratory disciplines or functional areas. Provides leadership to staff and ensures exemplary customer service in areas of responsibility. Coordinates technical functions with other lab personnel and other departments. Assists in developing policies/procedures, and identifies capital equipment needs. Assists in preparing salary and non-salary budget projections and ensuring all activities comply with established departmental and regulatory guidelines. Must be extremely knowledgeable of Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA).
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Establishes and maintains an open and effective communication channel with staff and physicians.
Comprehensive understanding of regulatory requirements, particularly The Joint Commission.
A working knowledge of Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) and their application to the Greene County General Hospital Laboratory.
Manages laboratory services in accordance with clinical and governmental standards and within established budget.
Facilitates development of department policies, procedures and work standards.
Ensures accurate and appropriate completion of laboratory tests including the processing of outside laboratory tests.
Compiles/analyzes data on departmental productivity, activity, prepares and presents statistical information to administration.
Responsible for cost-effective ordering/receiving/inventorying of laboratory supplies.
Selects, orients/trains, monitors, evaluates employees. Oversees work assignments and daily operations.
Reviews departmental performance and ensures compliance with accreditation, legal and other regulatory requirements.
Ensures effective operation and maintenance of laboratory instruments and equipment.
In conjunction with IT responsible for the oversight and effective operation of the laboratory management system (CPSI).
Other duties as may be assigned.
Education: Bachelor's degree in medical technology or chemical, physical, or biological science. Master’s degree preferred.
Licensure/Certification: Medical Technologist (MT) certification through the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP).
Experience: At least 5 years’ experience working in a medical laboratory and previous experience as a supervisor/manager is required. Extensive knowledge of Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA). Knowledge of current medical terminology to perform full range of laboratory tests and to communicate with medical staff regarding laboratory procedures and results. Knowledge of laboratory equipment and testing to perform quality control checks and troubleshooting of instrumentation. Skills in performing: a full range of laboratory tests; anticipating and reacting calmly to emergency situations; developing and maintaining department quality assurance; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients, staff and the public. Ability to read and understand information about instrumentation in laboratory field, to follow written protocols, to work independently and to communicate clearly.
Physical Requirements: Frequent sitting, standing and walking. Ability to reach, stoop, and bend. Occasionally lift up to 25 pounds.
