Pathology Assistant (Full-time, Days)
Under the general supervision of the Pathologist, examines and/or prepares surgical pathology specimens.
Knowledge of human anatomy, macro-surgical techniques, and general laboratory skills
Knowledge of universal safety and infection control requirements
Skilled with required medical and surgical instruments and equipment
Ability to obtain and prepare tissue for evaluation; ability to prepare and cut frozen specimens
Ability to communicate promptly, clearly and courteously, both verbally and writing with all hospital co-workers and customers
Proficiency in preparing and maintaining records
Ability to use electronic communication tools and software
Able to maintain positive interpersonal communication with physicians/patient/client/staff and encourage communication and appreciation of all forms of diversity
Ability to problem solve to adapt standard clinical procedures to the individual client's need
Ability to interpret, adapt and react calmly under stressful conditions
Ability to create a clinic atmosphere which encourages motivation, innovation, and high performance
Fellow of the American Association of Pathologist's Assitants (AAPA) preferred.
Job Specific Essential Duties:
Ensures Anatomic Pathology section meets compliance with standards of all accrediting and regulatory agencies by maintaining accurate records. Represent area during accreditation inspections.
Responsible for organizing efficient workflow processes in the frozen section and gross examination areas.
Responsible for specimen triage received from surgery; dictates gross findings using appropriate terminology; refers tissue sections for microscopic review by Pathologist or Resident.
Selects and identifies tissue for microscopic study; determines proper fixative solutions in which tissue will be maintained.
Performs specialized procedures such as frozen sections and decalcification and maintains and coordinates specimen and records for specialized procedures using appropriate protocols.
Submits request for special histological procedures and special stains when appropriate.
Responsible for preparing fine needle aspiration specimens.
Responsible for maintaining quality control and management of equipment and supplies in the surgical pathology laboratory.
Responsible for initiating and coordinating quality improvement activities and projects for the Pathology Department.
Maintains records of surgical pathology specimen dissections and dictation; assists in the compilation of reports for surgical pathology; labels and stores gross tissue specimen.
Performs photo microscopy on cases considered for interdepartmental conferences or for teaching purposes; maintain complete and accurate records of all gross and microscopic photographs.
Responsible for immediately addressing or informing management of safety issues or potential hazards; adheres to health and safety policies and procedures; participates in all safety programs.
Ensures coverage and attendance for assigned area is/are met. Supports leader with department policies and procedures.
Minimum Job Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in relevant field or at least 10 years of relevant experience
PA (ASCP) Certification required
– must maintain active throughout employment
2 years of experience as Pathology Assistant.
