The George Washington (GW) University School of Medicine and Health Sciences invites applications and nominations for the position of Chair, Department of Pathology. As part of a world-class medical school located in the heart of the nation’s capital, the talented and dedicated faculty, fellows, residents, and staff of the department are committed to providing the very best in pathology and clinical laboratory services, medical education, and research to the community, region, and nation.
The Department of Pathology is currently home to 30 full-time faculty members. The department provides clinical laboratory and pathology services to the GW University Hospital, located adjacent to the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, and the GW Medical Faculty Associates. Anatomic and Clinical Pathology services are located in dedicated space in the GW University Hospital with access to cutting-edge instrumentation. Active research programs in the Department include projects centered on HIV/AIDS, cancer pathogenesis and diagnosis, and tissue banking. The department provides training in the practice of both anatomic and clinical pathology through an ACGME-accredited residency program in Pathology as well as accredited fellowship programs.
Responsibilities include leading the clinical, educational, and service activities of the department; providing leadership in the laboratory accreditation process; promoting the professional development of the faculty; supporting diversity and inclusion among the department’s staff ,faculty, and trainees; fostering the research program of the department; establishing research collaborations within the institution and with organizations in the community; and managing the financial performance of the department.
The successful candidate must be a nationally recognized pathologist with an outstanding record of accomplishments in leadership, clinical care, education, and scholarship. The M.D. degree, or equivalent; board certification in Anatomic and/or Clinical Pathology, or comparable credentials; and possession of, or eligibility for, a medical license in the District of Columbia, are required.
Academic rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Employment offers are contingent on the satisfactory outcome of a standard background screening.
