Histotechnologist Johns Hopkins University, School of Medicine
The Department of Pathology is seeking a Histotechnologist that will work under the direct supervision of the Laboratory Supervisor/Manager or Medical Director or Principal Investigator or designee; performs a variety of both routine and complex laboratory tests in accordance with established standards and procedures. This individual will perform a variety of technical procedures on clinical and research specimens in the histology laboratory, performs high complexity procedures including but not limited to gross handling of clinical small biopsy specimens. Using knowledge and judgment completes description and tissue preparation for histological examination following regulatory requirements.
Duties & Responsibilities
The qualified individual will be responsible for performing the day-to-day technical procedures on clinical and research specimens including the following activities: • Prepares tissue samples for microscopic examination by a pathologist • Performs grossing/dissection of small specimens including but not limited to renal/kidney and heart tissue using skills and knowledge of tissue type and muscle structure. • Performs frozen tissue sectioning • Accessions and bills specimens • Maintains laboratory equipment • Programs and troubleshoots automated laboratory equipment. • Performs special stain techniques; immunofluorescence staining, embeds specimens; prepares various staining solutions; operating automated slide and cassettes, handles fresh tissue samples • Performs quality assurance procedures such as block and slide match, reagent monitoring and reports discrepancies per standard operating procedure. • Maintains and troubleshoots equipment, routine repairs or notifying service personnel when more complex problems occur. Performs related general duties such as ordering supplies, general lab housekeeping, and maintaining safety records. • Maintain accurate and detailed records. Provide accurate information on work conducted for client billing purposes, regulatory compliance and quality assurance.
Equipment, Machine, or Tool requirements
• Computer experience including MS Office, database, and email. • Telephone and Fax. • Experience with laboratory tools and equipment.
Individual must meet minimum CLIA requirements for high complexity testing (42CFR493.1489 (b)); evidence of compliance with records of qualifications including degree or transcript and work history in related field.
Associates degree in laboratory science, medical laboratory technology, or a related discipline required. Additional related experience can substitute for education.
JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
An earned bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science, or medical technology from an accredited institution OR an earned associate degree in a laboratory science or medical laboratory technology, obtained from an accredited institution, OR
Education/training equivalent to the above that includes at least 60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution. This education must include 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses, OR 24 semester hours of science courses that includes 6 semester hours of chemistry, 6 semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology or medical laboratory technology in any combination. In addition, the individual must have a laboratory training including either completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by the ABHES, NAACLA, or other organization approved by HHS (note that this training may be included in the 60 semester hours listed above), OR at least 3 months documented laboratory training in each specialty in which the individual perform high complexity testing.
Special knowledge, skills, and abilities • Work produced is subject to precise measure of quantity and quality; Attention to detail is critical to the successful performance of this job as it directly affects research outcomes. • Knowledge of normal human tissue morphology is essential. Able to perform paraffin as well as frozen sectioning, H&E staining, and to recognize discrepancies and take corrective action. • Individual should have strong written communication and interpersonal skills. Must have the ability to read and interpret direction, both oral and written, organize and prioritize work and follow through on assignments. Must be able to work successfully as part of a team in a high volume, dynamic laboratory.
Work Environment • While performing the duties of this job, the employee may remain in a stationary position (sitting or standing) up to 60% of the time. Occasionally required to traverse throughout the laboratory or to retrieve equipment, supplies, or specimens from other locations on campus. The employee is required to operate computer keyboard, laboratory instruments, and small laboratory tools such as pipettes, cutting instruments, glass tubes, dishes, and/or slides. Constantly repositions self to perform duties at laboratory work stations, gathering specimens, and loading equipment. • Prolonged vision requirements including viewing computer screen, paper reports/documents, charts and results. Visual acuity is required to distinguish fine gradation of color or structure and closely examine specimens (including via a microscope). • Laboratory environment - Exposure to toxins and infectious agents exist, but potential for personal injury or harm is minimized if established safety and health precautions are followed. Must refer to and are expected to comply with procedure manuals, follow proper laboratory protocols and safety policy/procedures, and be familiar with material data safety sheets in assigned work areas. Able to read and understand all Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) guidelines applicable to assigned work area. Working in laboratory where there may be discomforts due to odors, noise, temperature fluctuations, and working around lab equipment. Research areas may include animal, human, human products, DNA, and radiation protocols. Use of personal protective equipment may be advised or required. • May transport equipment and supplies usually less than 40 pounds from one area to another (in the laboratory or on campus). May be required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds with proper training, or precautions/lifting aides (example: supply boxes or Formalin cubes). In some areas work space is limited. • Staff may be required to complete annual competency review, and must insure compliance with Johns Hopkins Policy, Laboratory Policy & Procedure, Health, Safety & Environment regulations, and all applicable privacy & confidentiality laws/practices. • Many department laboratories operate 24/7 with schedules on day, evening, or night shift. Rotating schedules which may include weekend work and holiday assignment. • This is a Required Attendance position. In the event of unexpected university closings including inclement weather, the employee in this position is required to report to work and/or remain at work

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.
The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
