The Athletic Trainer gives sports medicine training, consultative, and application services to clients, schools, and athletic events. They assist clients according to physician orders, provide assistance in marketing the CHRISTUS Louisiana sports medicine center, and follow all policies and visions of CHRISTUS ST. Frances Cabrini hospital and the CHRISTUS Louisiana sports medicine center. They also educate athletes on proper stretching techniques, conduct thorough initial clinical evaluation of injuries and illnesses commonly sustained by the competitive athlete, and demonstrate thorough knowledge of functional anatomy and characteristic pathology of all common closed soft tissue injuries, open wounds, and fractures. Additionally, the ideal professional demonstrates proper knowledge of application of immobilization devices including cervical collars, spine boards, and splints, makes appropriate referrals to physician or emergency room where applicable, educates coaches and athletes on risk factors associated with exposure to blood and body secretions, provides health care information and counsels athletes, parents, and coaches on matters pertaining to the physical, psychological, and emotional health and well-being of the athlete, and acts as a liaison between physicians, coaches, athletes, and parents.
